Mennonite Disaster Service appoints Reynold Friesen as next executive director

Mennonite Disaster Service has appointed a new executive director.

MDS announced Monday that Reynold Friesen, the current director of alumni, church, and donor relations at Canadian Mennonite University, will enter this new role early next year.

Friesen will replace Ross Penner, who has held the position for over a decade and will retire in March 2026.

"I’m excited to be part of an organization which has a practical approach to living out faith," said Friesen.

Silver Alert cancelled after missing senior found safe

The Winnipeg Police Service has cancelled a Silver Alert for a 76-year-old woman.

Police had issued the alert on Monday afternoon, saying the woman had not been seen since 12 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14.

She was last seen near Shaftesbury Boulevard and Wilkes Avenue.

Just after 6:30 p.m. on Monday the WPS sent out a release saying she had been safely located. 

A Silver Alert is issued when a senior or vulnerable adult is missing or believed to be in danger. 

Elections Canada to launch review following issues with special ballots

Elections Canada is launching a probe into problems with special ballots in the last federal election.

"We really have to look at the controls in place to make sure that they are sufficient," and make improvements where possible, Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault told reporters at a press conference on Parliament Hill on Monday.

Plans for the review were outlined on Monday in the agency's report on the 45th general election held on April 28. The report promises a "comprehensive review" that will examine training, control mechanisms and processes."

Two dead in hit-and-run on Kenaston, impaired driving charges laid

Two people are dead and a man is in custody following a serious collision on Friday night on Kenaston Boulevard.

Winnipeg police say a 31-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene and a 25-year-old woman later died in hospital after being struck by a pickup truck just before 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 13 near Enterprise Drive.

According to a Winnipeg Police Service news release, the truck had been travelling southbound at a high rate of speed when it drove onto the shoulder and hit the two pedestrians. Police allege that the driver did not remain at the scene.
