Operation Christmas Child (OCC): Delivering hope and joy throughout the year

Samaritan's Purse, through Operation Christmas Child, is sharing hope and changing lives throughout the year, not just at Christmas.

"In November, of course, is when we collect the shoeboxes," says Lynette Loewen, the Regional Manager at Operation Christmas Child for Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Northwest Ontario. "It takes us some time to process them all. Then we have to ship them to all of our countries. Sometimes we're dealing with 10 or more countries."

'We envision a world changed by Jesus through sport'

“We believe sport is one of the most powerful cultural influencers that exists. And we believe that Jesus has the power to change the world. And so we envision a world changed by Jesus through sport.”

Steve Klassen is Regional Director of Athletes in Action (AIA) Manitoba Camps, which he explains is first and foremost a ministry made up of people who love sports, have found a passion in sports, and love Jesus.

The power of reading

2 Timothy 4:13

I will never forget being aboard a huge troop ship sailing from Taiwan to America. A lazy afternoon led me to a book of poetry, which I began to devour with delight. I was suddenly struck with the realization that someone was staring at me. Looking up, I saw a fellow Marine who outranked me by a couple of stripes. I expected him to order me into some duty, but to my surprise, he asked: “Hey, Marine, you got any books with pictures in ’em?” Knowing him, he probably would have coloured outside the lines!

A former Manitoba cabinet minister says he thought he was following the rules when he tried to push the approval of a silica sand mine after his party was defeated in an election.

Jeff Wharton has spoken to the media for the first time since the province's ethics commissioner issued a damning report last week into the actions of some members of the former Progressive Conservative government after losing the October 2023 election.

While officers were taking him to the cruiser car, the male ran down the street after breaking free.

King Charles, Queen Camilla arrive in Canada ahead of throne speech

King Charles arrived in Canada Tuesday afternoon for a short visit that will include reading the speech from the throne in Parliament.

The highly symbolic visit is happening as Canada copes with U.S. President Donald Trump's attempts to upend global trade with tariffs and his repeated calls for Canada's annexation.

The Canadian Armed Forces plane carrying the King and Queen Camilla landed in Ottawa shortly after 1 p.m.

Stuck train crossing arms cause major delays on Route 90

Traffic is clearing on Route 90 after a stuck train crossing arm caused major delays near McGillivray Boulevard on Monday.

The arms at the crossing were down for at least an hour, beginning late Monday morning.

Motorists were left in long lineups in both directions as traffic came to a standstill.

Several people contacted us through our talk and text line to report the issue.

The arms finally lifted just before 12:30 p.m., but delays are expected to continue as traffic slowly clears the backlog.
