Prime Minister Mark Carney will have to navigate a delicate balance during his first in-person meeting with Donald Trump today, following months of the U.S. president targeting Canada with tariffs and taunts.

Carney and Trump will meet at the White House and the prime minister has said he expects "difficult, but constructive" conversations.

Carney has said the meeting will mark the beginning of a larger economic and security agreement between Canada and the United States.

Newly elected Conservatives and returning MPs are set to meet in Ottawa this morning as the party charts its path forward after last week's election loss to the Liberals.

Leader Pierre Poilievre, who lost his bid to continue representing the riding of Carleton after 20 years as the area's MP, will not be in the House of Commons when it opens later this month.

In a video posted on social media Monday afternoon, Poilievre says he has a lot to be thankful for after the election, including an expanded coalition of Conservative voters.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

The world in which one person lives is too limited and restricted. When rubbing shoulders with another, we gain a panoramic view, which allows us to see the whole picture. "As in water face reflects face, so the heart of man reflects man" (Proverbs 27:19). That's so picturesque! People provide a clear reflection of what is in the heart. A mirror goes only skin deep. The counsel of a friend reflects what is down inside. 

With only a slight chance of rain over the next several days, the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service has issued a fire ban for the city of Winnipeg.

The ban prohibits Winnipeggers from having open fires, using backyard fire pits, fireworks or fire pits in City parks and use of solid fuel-burning appliances, including charcoal and wood burning appliances, even if a permit has previously been issued.

Propane and gas barbecues as well as fire tables are permitted.

Manitobans are being encouraged to take proactive steps to protect their families, homes, and communities during Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 4 to 10.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor says the week is a timely reminder of the power individuals and communities have to get ready for potential emergencies.

Dyana Lavallee stares at a copy of a photograph on display to the public at the Hudson's Bay Company Archives in Winnipeg. 

The Metis woman quickly recognizes it as the same one her grandmother had years ago. 

"This is my family," she said referring to the figures in the picture. "I'm actually shaking a bit."

It's not the first time Lavallee has visited the archives, but it is the first time she's seen that photo among the thousands of historical documents that are housed at the Archives of Manitoba. 

Winnipeg police are asking witnesses to come forward after a pedestrian was struck and killed Saturday night.

The collision happened around 10:30 p.m. on May 3 near the intersection of McPhillips Street and Notre Dame Avenue.

The Winnipeg Police Service says the Traffic Division is continuing to investigate and is looking for anyone with information, including security camera footage from the area or dash camera footage.

At this time, police have not released further details about the vehicle involved.
