'We need to be their voice': Motorcycle organization advocates for abused children

Dozens of motorcyclists gathered on Saturday morning at Deacon's Corner in Springfield for the Guardians of the Children's 'Empower the Children' motorcycle ride.

Guardians of the Children is an advocacy organization that supports and protects children who have endured abuse. The organization has a motorcycle-focused outreach.

The group supports victims of child abuse by accompanying them to court and holding family-focused events to foster healing and healthy connections.

Street resurfacing forces temporary closure of St. Vital fire hall

The resurfacing of a St. Vital street has lead to the temporary closure of a Winnipeg fire hall.

According to the United Firefighters of Winnipeg, Station 26, located at 1525 Dakota St., will be closed effective Aug. 16.

"Just days after a Southwalk Bay fire destroyed one home and damaged two others—where the closest available fire apparatus took nearly 2.5x longer than the national standard—St. Vital residents will now face continued response delays around the clock," said the UFFW in a post on Facebook

She is survived by husband Tom, and their children Kaitlin, Chloe, Hayden (Moriah) and granddaughter Maggie, her mother Jean Janick and siblings Bob, Brian & Marg, and her sister and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents-in-law. 

'Screaming into silence': Parents of serial killer victim address special hearing

The father of a First Nations woman who died at the hands of a Winnipeg serial killer told a special court hearing his family was left to "grieve in pieces" for three years before she was identified.

The family and community of Ashlee Shingoose presented victim impact statements Friday during the hearing in Manitoba's Court of King's Bench.

It came one year after Jeremy Skibicki was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life for killing Shingoose and three other First Nations women.

Air Canada flight attendants on strike, airline's flights cancelled

Passengers around the world are feeling the effects after the union representing more than 10,000 flight attendants with Air Canada announced its members were walking off the job after it was unable to reach an eleventh hour deal with the airline.

The strike officially began just before 1 a.m. ET on Saturday.

Keelin Pringnitz and her family, from Ottawa, were returning from a European vacation, but were left stranded after flights were cancelled.

Canada Post and union meeting delayed until next week due to mediator availability

A meeting between Canada Post and the union representing 55,000 postal workers has been delayed until next week due to the availability of federal mediators, the company says.

The two sides, which were set to meet Friday, will now meet on Aug. 20.

It's been two weeks since members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers rejected the employers' latest offers in a majority vote.

After more than a year and a half of negotiations, the two sides met with federal mediators earlier this week before agreeing to meet with each other.

Ghana and Cuba Pavilions mark a memorable finale for the CHVN Cruiser at Folklorama

The CHVN Cruiser was thrilled to spend its last night at Folklorama with the Ghana Pavilion and Cuba Pavilion on Friday evening.

The Ghana Pavilion was at the Holy Cross Gymnasium, 290 Dubuc Street, while the Cuba Pavilion was held at the Heather Curling Club,120 Youville Street.

The Ghana Pavilion had the rich heritage, traditions, and culture of Ghana, and its cultural display had artifacts filled with symbolism and importance.
