Winning weekend on the roller derby track

Two local roller derby teams skated circles around their opponents resulting in a winning weekend for both. 

The Ra Ra Riots, junior team took on the Bridge City Bruiser's from Saskatoon this past weekend at the Innovationplex as part of their season and home opener. 

Ella Toles a member of the Redneck Betties senior roller derby team shares the results from the junior game. 

"The kids did so good. So, the final score was our Ra Ra's won with 306 points to 192 points for the Bridge City Bruiser's."

Digging safe can save thousands

The Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance (SCGA) is reminding residents to dig safely throughout the month of April and throughout the year.

Ra Ra Riots and Redneck Betties set sights on home opener

Residents are invited to come down to the Innovationplex this Saturday to cheer on the local junior and senior roller derby teams in their home season opener. 

Redneck Betties member Ella Toles provides details on the event. 

"Starting off the day at 4:30pm our juniors the Ra Ra Riots will be playing against Saskatoon's juniors. And then after that our senior team the Redneck Betties will be playing against Scarlett Fever at 7:00pm and they are Brandon's team."

Local students take home numerous awards at Regional Drama Festival

Local high school students took to the stage recently as the Swift Current Comprehensive High School hosted the Regional Drama Festival. 

The high school submitted two productions to the festival My Brothers Gift and The Inexplicable Chaos Factor of Mia Gregory, both of which walked away with a number of awards. 

Grade 11 student Mapalo Mushoriwa acted in one of the productions and explains the additional aspects of the festival in addition to performances. 

Canada Post issues red delivery service alert for Swift Current

Residents shouldn't worry about venturing out to their mailboxes this afternoon. 

Canada Post has issued a red delivery service alert for Swift Current.

According to a press release from Canada Post, this service alert means that they are "suspending delivery for the day and not sending our delivery agents out or recalling them."

This alert has been put in place due to inclement weather and freezing rain. 

Local thespians on the hunt for gramophone as festival approaches

Swift Current will be full of young thespians at the end of this month as the Swift Current Comprehensive High School hosts the upcoming regional drama festival. 

The school's drama program will be entering two productions into the festival and residents will have the chance of a sneak peek as Riley Sharp history teacher and technical director of the school's drama program explains. 

Blast of winter leads to road closures and travel advisories

As we endure the latest blast of winter, travel is not recommended on the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy #1) from Maple Creek through Swift Current and on to Moose Jaw. 

Highways 47, 18, 35, 6 around the Weyburn, Carlyle and Estevan area are currently closed. 

A snowfall warning remains in effect for Swift Current and the surrounding area with snow expected to end this afternoon. 

Safety tips for the month of unpredictable weather

As we begin the month of March, the Swift Current Fire Department are asking residents to take note of a few safety issues at this time of the year. 

Fire Chief Ryan Hunter reminds locals to avoid the area surrounding Swift Current Creek as it's that time in the season when temperatures freeze at night and thaw during the day and this in turn makes the ice weak. 

Saskatchewan artist's nature focused pieces on display

Art lovers are in for a treat with the new exhibit at the Art Gallery of Swift Current entitled The Archival Shore by Saskatchewan artist Gladys Wozny Siemens. 

With deep love and focus on the natural world, Wozny Siemens provides some details on her work.

"Plaster casts that I have taken of animal tracks and textures and shapes that I find on the ground near my home. And I make a plaster cast, a part of nature you might say."

She says she incorporates this into her sculptures and has an interesting story of how she began with this form of artwork.
