Firefighters from across Manitoba continue to rally together as wildfires rage in several parts of the province, including a large blaze in the Rural Municipality of Piney, which has been 50 percent contained by Friday evening.
Piney wildfire now 50 percent contained, crews focus on hot spots
The wildfire burning in the Rural Municipality of Piney is now 50 percent contained, according to the latest update from the RM of Piney.
Crews continue to battle hot spots along Fireguard 14, with efforts focused on securing the northeast line near Badger and extending lines near St. Labre and Whitemouth Lake Road.
More local fire fighters head out to battle wildfires
Local fire departments continue to help battle the wildfires burning in Eastern Manitoba.
The latest round of fire fighters to pack up and head out are from the Boyne River Mutual Aid District and includes five members from Carman-Dufferin with two apparatus, two members each from Elm Creek and Ste. Claude, five fire fighters from Miami along with a tanker truck, and a crew from the Rosenort Fire Department along with a side-by-side vehicle.
*UPDATE* RM of Piney wildfire grows to 8904.7 hectares; rain brings hope
UPDATE: 1:25 p.m.
According to the Rural Municipality of Piney, Manitoba Wildfire Service has updated the size of the wildfire in the area to 8904.7 hectares.
This is an increase of more than 1,000 hectares from an update on Thursday, when the blaze covered 7886 hectares of land.
Evacuation order remains in place as Lac du Bonnet wildfire continues to burn

Manitoba Hydro seeing 'extensive damage' to infrastructure due to wildfires
Wildfires in eastern Manitoba are causing significant damage to powerlines, resulting in power outages.
Peter Chura, a media relations officer with Manitba Hydro, says about 500 homes were without power as of Thursday morning due to blazes in the area.
"It's still a little bit difficult to put in a time of restoration on that because we're just accessing the areas where we've seen a lit of damage," he says, noting that damage includes burnt and fallen poles, powerlines, transformers, and other equipment.
West Hawk Lake couple 'trying to stay calm' amid wildfire evacuation
A couple in West Hawk Lake are holding to hope as they are evacuated from the area due to a wildfire.
"Things are looking fine on our end, like the south," says TJ Harder, co-owner of Tallpine Lodges in the area.
He says on Wednesday night, a lot of smoke blew in, but otherwise it's been relatively normal—aside from, of course, an evacuation order the province recently put out.
