Rental scam leaves victim without apartment, out money

Winkler Police are reminding the public to be cautious when making rental agreements online, after a local woman was scammed out of both her deposit and a place to live. 

According to police, the woman reported on May 31 that her “landlord” refused to give her the keys to an apartment, despite her having signed a rental agreement and paid a deposit. Officers determined she had been dealing with a scammer and not the actual property owner.

Meat producers warn internal trade bill could cause blowback with trade partners

The Canadian Meat Council is warning that the Liberal government’s legislation to ease the movement of goods and services within Canada could actually undermine red meat exports.

Lauren Martin, senior director of public affairs for the organization, says the bill is raising questions about whether it could lead the federal government to recognize provincial rules for inspecting meat processing facilities as equal to federal standards.

It is a Grey Ford F350 crew cab with the license number CHH 294. It also has the business logo 'PGC' on the sides.

Two youths were taken to hospital following a UTV/semi crash Monday morning on Highway 244 in the R.M. of Treherne. 

According to RCMP, when officers arrived on scene, they discovered a semi-truck on the shoulder of the highway, facing north, and the UTV laying in the ditch on the west side of the road.

A top federal official said fixing the payroll problems caused by Phoenix cost taxpayers more than $5 billion — and they'll keep paying extra to run two public service payroll platforms at once as Ottawa weans itself off the problem-plagued system.

Alex Benay, associate deputy minister at Public Services and Procurement Canada, said the alternative to running the Phoenix system in tandem with its replacement, Dayforce, would have been worse.

"The unfortunate situation is there's no easy path," he said. "This is the one that's going to impact employees the least."

Protein Industries Canada says a new soybean breeding program will open new opportunities for producers and processors.

The new $4.3 million initiative for Canada's identity-preserved non-GMO soybean is being led by NRGene Canada, Pulse Genetics, Hensall Co-op, and Yumasoy Foods Ltd. 

The project, involves the launch of a new breeding program to develop early-maturing, high-protein, non-GMO soybean varieties suited to Canada’s northern climates, including Manitoba and northern Ontario.
