Hockey, political players react to death of Montreal Canadiens great Ken Dryden

Politicians and hockey stars are mourning the loss of hockey legend and former federal politician Ken Dryden, who passed away Friday at age 78 after a battle with cancer.

Dryden, 78, was a Hall of Fame goaltender who won six Stanley Cups backstopping the Montreal Canadiens as well as minding the cage during Canada's generation-defining victory at the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviet Union.

Air Canada flight attendants massively reject wage offer, union says

Air Canada flight attendants have massively rejected the employer's wage offer following a vote on a new contract that ended Saturday.

Flight attendants at Air Canada wrapped up voting at 3 p.m. ET  on the tentative new contract, with 99.1 per cent voting down the airline's wage offer. 

The airline says the wage portion will now be referred to mediation as previously agreed to by both sides.

Flyers fall to Pistons in preseason opener

It was a strong opening period for the Winkler Flyers, but it didn't last as the Steinbach Pistons took the first preseason game 5-2 on Friday night.

Strong start

In the opening period, the Flyers came out strong. Showcasing a young, hungry roster, came out skating fast, and hitting anything in a blue sweater. 

Several times, the veterans not dressed in the game and watching from the corner were brought to their feet, cheering on the young players for solid hits.

A harvest collision wake-up call for Stanley's Chris Unrau

Rural Municipality (RM) of Stanley's Chris Unrau wants his story to help others avoid making the same or worse mistake than he made last Thursday.  

Unrau is the first to admit he made a mistake doing something he says, "I literally preach about to my family and my staff about how dangerous it can be out in the rural areas, especially during harvest when there's lots going on."

Ken Dryden, the Hall of Fame goaltender whose long resume in and out of hockey included six Stanley Cup victories and helping backstop Canada's generation-defining victory at the 1972 Summit Series, died Friday at the age of 78 after a battle with cancer.

A key member of the Montreal Canadiens' 1970s dynasty, Dryden's career in the spotlight was only just getting started when he retired from the game — and while at the top of his own game — in his early 30s.

New boardwalks along Lake Minnewasta trail add a nugget of fun

The Stanley Trail Association has completed a project to enhance the cycling experience for those venturing out on the trails around Lake Minnewasta.

Organizers of the 9th Earl Dick Memorial Golf Tournament are celebrating yet another successful event after more than $5,600 was raised Thursday at Oakview Golf and Country Club near Gretna. Eight-one golfers participated in this year's fundraiser.

"It's amazing," said Jim Dick, organizer and son of the late Earl Dick. "When we look back at at the support we've received from the community, the golf community and others, it just marvels me every time that we're always sold out."
