Students from Garden Valley Collegiate (GVC) in Winkler are taking audiences over the rainbow this April with a vibrant production of The Wizard of Oz. Taking the stage April 24–26, the musical features an enthusiastic and passionate cast of students, including Julia Loewen as Dorothy and Taylor Hildebrand as Glinda the Good Witch.

Stepping into an iconic role

For Loewen, stepping into the ruby slippers of Dorothy has been a rewarding challenge.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew has discussed increased trade with representatives from Europe and appears open to having a second port on Hudson Bay.

Kinew met this morning with ambassadors and high commissioners from the European Union and 18 member countries.

He says the meeting was a chance to show the countries, which represent a market of 450 million people, that Manitoba is open for business.

Canadians got a break on inflation in March as gas prices fell and a slowdown in travel to the United States helped cool airfare costs, Statistics Canada said Tuesday.

The annual rate of inflation slowed to 2.3 per cent last month, down from 2.6 per cent in February. A poll provided by LSEG Data & Analytics ahead of Tuesday’s release had expected yearly inflation to hold steady month-to-month.

StatCan said gas prices fell 1.6 per cent year-over-year in March, coming off a hike of 5.1 per cent in February.

Trudy Friesen nee Peters, 85, of Winkler passed away Monday, April 14th at Salem Home. She is survived by 1 son. She was predeceased by her husband Reverend David Friesen.  
A memorial service for Trudy Friesen nee Peters will be held Wednesday, April 16th at 2pm at Winkler Bergthaler Mennonite Church with burial prior to the service at Blumenort Cemetery.

Manitoba Pork celebrated its 60th anniversary during its annual meeting and industry banquet Thursday in Winnipeg. Producers, processors and various stakeholders gathered at the Fairmont for the day full of meetings which was capped by an evening gala. There are currently 188 registered producers in the province, representing 608 farms and 22,000 full-time equivalent jobs. 

The results are in, and 68% of the people who responded to the Town of Altona's Big Easel Restoration survey believe the towering steel structure should remain a landmark in the community.

It was an incredible year for curling's Team Sugden, and coach Gord Titchkosky couldn't be prouder but also believes their best is yet to come.

The elevator that has been under repair at Salem Home since the beginning of the year is officially fully functional again.  

Salem Home CEO Karin Oliveira shared that the completion of the elevator lined up well with the renovations on the second floor, and the process of moving residents back into their old rooms is now underway.
