Sea Bears sign five players to protected list

The Winnipeg Sea Bears of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) have retained the first right to negotiate with five members of its 2024 team for the 2025 season.
 
In the CEBL, all players are on single-season contracts, which means every club must sign its full roster each Spring. Free agency for the 2025 season begins Feb. 1. Each club is granted the right to negotiate with players on their protected list from now until Mar. 1 without interference from other CEBL teams.
 

Fundraising Truck Drive for Special Olympics athletes returns Saturday morning

The Law Enforcement Torch Run and Special Olympics Manitoba will be joining together for the annual fundraising Truck Drive Saturday morning (September 7th). The event is presented by the Manitoba Trucking Association, and is happening during National Trucking Week.

The Perimeter Highway around Winnipeg will rumble with the sound of passionate Manitoba truckers in a display of support for Special Olympics Manitoba athletes… with many of those tracks taking athletes for the ride.

Sports Update - Thursday, September 5th

The Winnipeg Goldeyes season will be on the line Friday night at Blue Cross Park. The Fish were held to just five hits and lost 5-0 to the Canaries Wednesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium in game one of the American Association's best-of-three West Division semifinal. Edwin Arroyo and Jake McMurray had two hits each for the Goldeyes. Winnipeg starter Joey Matulovich took the loss. He went four innings, allowed four hits, three earned runs and struck out five. 

Sweet initiative: Manitoba beekeepers rally to fight global hunger

For those who support the Canadian Foodgrains Bank in Manitoba, they will know the passion Gordon Janzen has for this organization that is devoted to end world hunger.

Janzen is the CFB's Regional Rep for Manitoba and Kenora and has launched a new initiative to raise more funds for the Foodgrains Bank, and the plan is as sweet as honey. 

WSD Superintendent weighs in on province-wide school cell phone ban

This autumn, the school year will look a bit different for students in Manitoba due to a provincial cell phone ban.  

“There will be significant changes with personal device use at schools by both students and staff due to a new directive by the province of Manitoba in regards to cell phones in schools,” says Stephen Ross, the superintendent of Western School Division. “The big focus really is just going to be on limiting any kind of use during instructional time.” 

China announces anti-dumping investigation on canola seed imports

China's Ministry of Commerce has announced plans to launch an anti-dumping case into Canadian canola seed imports.

The action was initiated in response to a Canadian decision to impose tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, steel and aluminum.

Canadian Canola Council of Canada ((CCC) CEO and President Chris Davison says China is an important and valued market for Canadian canola.

“We are confident that an investigation into Canada’s canola trade with China will demonstrate alignment with and reinforce our support for rules-based trade.”

It’s back to school today for many students across the Pembina Valley. It’s official, Summer vacation is over and it’s back to class for another year, and there’s always a lot of excitement on that first day.

14 year old Peyton Hildebrandt is going into Grade 10 at W.C. Miller Collegiate in Altona.

"I'm excited to learn new things," she shared. "I love learning, personally, and my favourite is math."

Her sister, 12 year old Regan, is attending a new school this year for Grade 7, Ecole Parkside in Altona.
