Track star Danica Penner talks running, records and more

It's been an incredible time for running sensation Danica Penner and the 12-year-old from the Blumenort area plans to keep on doing what she loves. 

"I started doing cross-country in grade 5," Penner explains. "My mom had suggested that I should try it out because I was good at running. That first race I placed really, really well, so I figured that if it works out, why don't I just keep trying."

Power outage reported in Steinbach

A power outage has been reported on the northwest side of Steinbach, affecting approximately 134 customers.

According to Manitoba Hydro, the outage started at 4:03 p.m. and is estimated to be restored at 7:30 p.m.

A smaller outage, affecting less than five customers has also been reported on the northeast side of Steinbach.

The cause of the outages is unknown, and further information is unavailable at this time. 

New federal disability payments roll out in July

Several Government of Canada payments are scheduled to roll out over the coming weeks, with eligible Canadians seeing multiple deposits land in their bank accounts throughout July.

The first federal payment of the month is the GST/HST credit, which is set to arrive on Friday, July 4. This quarterly credit helps offset the cost of the goods and services tax for lower- and modest-income individuals and families. 

McCain Foods looks for new processing potatoes

Company works with the Farming Smarter Association as it searches for options other than the century-old Russet Burbank variety

Russet Burbank has been the go to potato variety for Canadian farmers and consumers.

This year, McCain Foods in Chin, Alta., has entered a corporate partnership with the Farming Smarter Association to explore the viability of other varieties in its food processing plant for farmers to consider.

Farming Smarter is using one of its commercial plots to do a research trial growing four varieties using six treatments.

Corn fields loving the heat but could use more rain

Knee-high by the first of July. 

That is an old saying by farmers that is used as a measuring stick to determine how their corn crops are faring in summer. Karis Hutlet, Sales Associate at Marc Hutlet Seeds, says based on that benchmark, corn fields in the southeast mostly met that target.

"And certainly, past it actually in most areas," she says. "Today is the 3rd and things are pretty much up to my chest or shoulders, and I'm what you would consider an average height."

Applied research associations receive $3.2 million in provincial funding

One-time grant from Alberta government to help applied research associations upgrade equipment, facilities and infrastructure

Alberta’s government has provided a one-time grant of $3.2 million to 12 applied research associations across the province.

This capital funding will enable the research associations to upgrade equipment, facilities and infrastructure.

With the additional funding, the research associations will be able to address pressing capital equipment issues.

Increased temperatures, increase potential for blue-green algae

A reminder to be monitoring water sources on a regular basis right now.

With temperatures increasing across the prairies livestock producers should be on the lookout for blue-green algae in dugouts, lakes, and reservoirs. 

Blue-green algae are naturally occurring bacteria that can be present in water bodies and commonly occur during calm, hot weather in water bodies with shallow, slow-moving, or still water that has sufficient nutrients. 

It's official: Bunge and Viterra have completed their merger. 

The proposed merger between Bunge and Viterra was finalized on July 2nd.
