Physiological Leaf Spot is showing up in Southern Alberta

Physiological Leaf Spot is suspected in a number of winter wheat fields in Southern Alberta.

Physiological leaf spot (PLS) appears as round or oval lesions that may be yellow or bleached white to gray in color. Lesions may also have a dark center with a narrow chlorotic (yellow) halos and tend to be more numerous toward the tip of the leaf blade. PLS lesions are often found in the upper canopy, and missing or rare on lower leaves.

Family says Canadian dentist was aboard Air India flight that crashed after takeoff

The Canadian citizen believed to be on an Air India flight that crashed shortly after takeoff is a dentist from Mississauga, Ont., her family has confirmed.

The husband of Nirali Sureshkumar Patel said she was on board the London-bound flight that crashed Thursday, killing at least 240 people.

Patel's dental clinic referred The Canadian Press to the husband, who said that he was in the process of booking travel to India for himself and the couple's one-year-old child.

Hanover approves request for private school

A church in Hanover has been given municipal approval to run a private school. 

Peace River Gospel Church, located southeast of Mitchell needed conditional use approval in order to establish the school on their property. The church is located along Road 35 North, north of Homestead Crescent. 

Herbert Unrau appeared before Hanover Council Wednesday morning. Unrau told Council that they want to run the school within their existing church building. An expansion of the building or construction of a new building is something they may consider in the future.

Giroux picnic and market aims to build community spirit

A new event aimed at bringing people together is coming to Giroux in just over one week.

Organizer Rebecca Waczko says the gathering will be a picnic and market, taking place at the community’s picnic shelter on June 21, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

"We are going to have a barbecue, live music, (and) we're going to have Steinbach Animal and Area Rescue come with some adoptables. ROC Eastman will be there collecting used sports goods," she says.

Walking track and play zone expected to open by late summer

The Southeast Event Centre is getting closer to the full grand opening and progress continues on completing the facility.

While the building has been in use for several months, several key amenities remain under construction. That includes the children’s play zone, the walking track, and the gymnasium — all of which are now expected to open before the end of summer.

A few delays, but progress is steady
