There has been a steady rise in the number of people seeking asylum at a major border crossing south of Montreal, border officials said Tuesday amid concerns that Trump administration policies could drive another massive influx of migrants to Canada.
The rise in would-be refugees at the St-Bernard-de-Lacolle crossing coincides with the looming expiration of the temporary status of hundreds of thousands of migrants in the United States.

Charges not to be laid after fatal police shooting near La Broquerie
Manitoba's police watchdog says it will not be authorizing charges following a police shooting that killed a man near La Broquerie.
On May 24 last year, RCMP officers were patrolling highway 52 near La Broquerie after getting several calls about a suspicious man.
They found a vehicle stopped on the highway, where a man with an "edged weapon" was reportedly choking the woman behind the wheel, police explained at the time.
Habs bring home U13A championship banner
Another championship is set to be hung at the HyLife Centre in La Broquerie as the U13A team won their final game of the year to bring home special memories along with a banner.
"It's very exciting, what a great accomplishment," Head Coach Gerard Tetrault said proudly. "We knew coming into the season that we had a great team, great potential, very young but a lot of talent on top of heart and soul. We knew good things could happen but we were hoping to be there at the end. Things lined up perfectly for us to achieve the ultimate objective, which was to bring home the banner."
RM of Ste Anne invites feedback on possible new sewage system
The RM of Ste Anne is inviting local feedback as it looks to build a new sewage system for Richer.
Richard Pelletier, the RM's reeve, says, this project has been a consideration even prior to the current council, and could have important ramifications for the community.
A contribution to community growth
"We want the town to grow, and the people want the town to grow," Pelletier says. "If we want to grow, wastewater (infrastructure) would make it happen."
Construction in Hanover trending ahead of 2024 pace
Construction activity is ahead of last year's pace in the Rural Municipality of Hanover.
Planning Manager Jeremy Neufeld says from January 1st through March 31st this year, the municipality issued 56 building permits, totalling $11.2 million. By comparison, the municipality issued 44 permits, worth a combined $9.4 million through the same period a year ago.
"January through March, it's always typically a bit of a slower period as we're coming out of our winter slumber," shares Neufeld. "But we have seen a stronger start this year than we did comparatively last year."

The celebration of life for Julia Wiebe will be held Friday, April 11th at 2pm at Morris Fellowship Chapel with burial at Hespeler Cemetery, Niverville.
Viewing will be at Morris Funeral Home Thursday, April 10th from 7 to 8pm and at the church prior to the service.
