The City of Steinbach continues to build strong connections with leaders at all levels of government, with Mayor Earl Funk emphasizing the importance of working together to support regional growth and services.

One of those connections was reinforced during a recent conversation between Funk and Manitoba’s Minister of Municipal and Northern Relations, Glen Simard.

“I thanked him for the upgrades on Highway 12,” said Funk. “That’s not just a Steinbach road—it connects the southeast, and people across the region rely on it.”

6-year-old golfer Liam Penner wins tournament at Maplewood

Liam Penner is just six years old but this past weekend, the golf sensation from Mitchell won a tournament that was held at Maplewood Golf Course.

If you think that six is young, Liam says he started golfing at a much younger age because of someone very special. "(I golf because of) my dad," he says with a big, proud smile. "I was one when I started golf."

Pretty amazing for the young athlete to be getting better as quick as he is, but Liam says he's enjoying the work. "We practice three times a week."

Immigration minister defends border bill's restrictions on asylum claims

Safeguards have been written into the government's border bill to ensure civil rights and due process are upheld in proposed immigration regulations, Immigration Minister Lena Diab said Wednesday.

Critics and advocacy groups are calling the wide-ranging border security legislation a threat to civil liberties in the immigration and asylum system.

One proposed change in the legislation would prevent people from making asylum claims if they've been in Canada for more than a year.

Throne speech adopted without a vote in House of Commons

The government's reply to the throne speech was adopted in the House of Commons Wednesday. 

It was adopted "on division," meaning no recorded vote was held. It does not need a vote in the Senate.

Leader of the Government in the House of Commons Steven MacKinnon said on social media that the adoption of the speech sets the stage for a "strong and focused agenda."

"We have a clear mandate to deliver on priorities for Canadians and build a strong Canada — and we're going to do just that," MacKinnon said. 

Marc Garneau, Canada's first person in space, dies at 76

Marc Garneau, the first Canadian in space who went on to become a high-profile federal politician, has died at 76 years old.

MPs rose for a moment of silence in the House of Commons tonight at the request of government whip Mark Gerretsen.

Garneau was a pioneer in Canada's space program.

He later entered politics, serving as a Liberal member of Parliament for a Montreal-area riding between 2008 and 2023. 

He held many cabinet positions in Justin Trudeau's government, including Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Transport.

Driver clocked at 151 km/h with three children in the vehicle

The Ste. Anne Police Service is reminding drivers about the deadly risks of speeding after a recent traffic stop on the Trans-Canada Highway. 

According to a message posted to social media, an officer pulled over a vehicle that was travelling at 151 km/h. Police say what made the incident on Monday especially concerning was that three young children were also in the vehicle. 

Provencher MP hears from nearly a dozen municipalities at national conference

Provencher Member of Parliament Ted Falk says infrastructure, federal funding, and community growth were top concerns raised during meetings with municipal leaders at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) conference held in Ottawa from May 29 to June 1. 

Falk met with numerous Reeves, mayors, and councillors from across the Provencher riding who were in the capital for the annual event. He said the gathering was a rare opportunity to meet with a wide range of local officials over just a few days.
