ATV safety tips for this August long weekend

The August long weekend is here, and All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) riders are stoked to hit the trails.

Gary Hora, president of the Woodridge ATV Sandhogs and Manitoba ATV Association, says this is the first major long weekend riders can enjoy backcountry areas on their machines, after nine consecutive weeks of travel restrictions.

"I don't think a lot of people got any time (on ATVs) in the spring and they're probably anxious to get out there, which is great," he says.

Movie shoot closes southeast road

A movie shoot has shut down a road again in southeastern Manitoba.

The Rural Municipality of Ritchot has indicated that Provincial Road (PR) 305 is currently closed between PR 200 and Levesque Road, east of Ste. Agathe.

The closure will be in effect until 10 pm on Friday.

Local access will be permitted on a stop-and-go basis.

Truck traffic is asked to use detour routes via PR 200, PR 311, and Highway 59.

The RM of Ritchot would like to thank residents and drivers for their patience and cooperation during this temporary disruption.

Smoky weekend expected after smokiest month on record

July will go down as the smokiest month on record for Steinbach and area. And a meteorologist says we can expect that smoky trend to continue this August long weekend.

Scott Kehler with Weatherlogics says our long weekend will actually feature fairly benign weather. He notes it will be very normal weather for early August.

Daytime highs this weekend are expected to be between 26 and 28 degrees, with overnight lows around 15 degrees. The normal high for this time of year is 26 degrees, and the average overnight low is 13 degrees.

Union vote on Canada Post contract offer set to wrap up Friday afternoon

Unionized workers at Canada Post are entering their final day to vote on the Crown corporation's latest contract offer.

Voting is set to wrap up today at 5 p.m., with results expected to be shared shortly after.

The offer includes wage hikes of about 13 per cent over four years but also adds part-time workers that Canada Post has said are necessary to keep the postal service afloat.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has urged the roughly 55,000 postal service workers it represents to reject the proposal.
