Jets finish regular season with OT win, set to open playoffs Saturday against Blues
The Winnipeg Jets closed out their regular season with a 2-1 overtime win against the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night, and will kick off the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs on Saturday evening at home.
Mark Scheifele played the hero in the extra frame, scoring just 1:11 into overtime to seal the win. Neal Pionk had the other goal for Winnipeg, while Connor Hellebuyck turned aside 30 shots to earn the victory.
The Jets finish the season with a record of 56-22-4, setting a franchise-best 116 points to win the Presidents’ Trophy.
Manitoba, Nunavut premiers hopeful for hydro project, seeking federal help
The premiers of Manitoba and Nunavut are hopeful a proposed hydroelectric and fibre optic project is moving closer to fruition and are seeking federal money.
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew and Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok have signed a memorandum to work together on the project and ask Ottawa for capital funding.
The proposed Kivalliq Hydro-Fibre Link would see a 1,200-kilometre line built through northern Manitoba to several Nunavut communities west of Hudson Bay that currently use diesel to generate electricity.
Carney, Poilievre align on pipelines as Trump and trade loom over French debate
Liberal Leader Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre aligned on support for new oil and gas pipelines as a matter of national security during the French language election debate Wednesday night.
Dealing with U.S. President Donald Trump was a running theme as the four main federal party leaders took the stage in Montreal for the first of two debates. Even the debate moderator Patrice Roy cited the elephant in the room as he pitched questions on immigration, affordability and Canadian identity.
City of Steinbach moves ahead with $132 million wastewater project
Steinbach city council has approved a resolution to apply for more than $66 million in federal funding to help pay for major wastewater infrastructure upgrades.
The application will be submitted through the direct delivery stream of the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF), a federal program designed to support municipal infrastructure related to housing growth.
Bethesda Foundation delivers cheque for hospital expansion project
Bethesda Foundation has handed another cheque to Southern Health-Sante Sud for the massive expansion happening at the Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach.
Numerous improvements are happening within the entire project, but Bethesda Foundation is specifically helping fund the new and expanded surgery department, as well as the palliative care enhancements.

Southeast Cancer Support Services (SCSS) is marveling after raising more than $48,000 through its Hope in Heels Fashion Show and Gala.
Cindi Rempel Patrick with the organization says donations continue to flow in.
"We're still getting people who are sending in cheques, going on our website and saying, 'Hey, I'd like to contribute. As of Tuesday, I think it went up by about $400," she says.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) is holding their National Agricultural Leaders Debate on Thursday, April 17th.
CFA President Keith Currie says, like most Canadians, producers are concerned about what's happening south of the border and the plethora of executive orders that President Trump is putting in motion.
No serious injuries in school bus crash on Highway 59
The Tache Fire Department responded to a school bus crash Wednesday afternoon.
Fire Chief Allan Rau says they were called to the intersection of Highway 59 and Prefontaine Road, which is two miles north of Provincial Road 311. Rau says a school bus and SUV collided there.
"There was luckily no children on the school bus, simply the driver," says Rau.
He notes the driver of the school bus, as well as the lone occupant of the SUV were checked on scene by EMS. He adds that nobody was transported to hospital.

Norm Gregoire from Shared Legacy says that we have three different types of amphibians found throughout Manitoba.
“We have eight frogs, toads, four of those, and four salamanders as well. So, a total of 16 across Manitoba. Just about all of those are found right in the tall grass prairie. Others are elsewhere in the province, but we'll learn a little bit about all of them.”
