Sports Round-Up: Wednesday, July 24

Nate Mensik, Nathan Houston, Joe Osborn AND Garrett Dennis all hit home runs and the Moose Jaw Miller Express outscored the 57s in Swift Current 13-8 in Western Canadian Baseball League action last night.


The Miller Express have games tonight and tomorrow in Lethbridge against the Bulls, and they’ll be back at Ross Wells Friday night to face the 57s.

Rambler Park Fastball League, the Moose Jaw Canadians will be at Kaplan Field tonight, where they’ll play the Okanese Thunderstrikers. 

Hillcrest Golf Club requests Municipal Project status for course renovations

The Hillcrest Golf Club is proceeding with plans for a multi-year, $3.5 million upgrade to their course. The Hillcrest needs approval from the City of Moose Jaw because the course includes City-owned land, and management hope to get municipal project status at the same time. 

Municipal Project status for the Hillcrest’s upgrade plans would mean the golf club could issue charitable tax receipts to qualified donors who contribute to the upgrades.

They're heading down the home stretch In the Western Canadian Baseball League. The regular season schedule is into its final two weeks.

The Moose Jaw Miller Express have dropped to 4th place in the East Division with a 22-22 record. They're in action tonight in Swift Current against the 57s.

Sports Round-Up: Monday, July 22

It took an extra inning at Ross Wells Park last night and the Moose Jaw Miller Express beat the Regina Red Sox 13-12. The Express will take their 22-22 record into Swift Current tomorrow to face the 57s. 

A double header against the East Central Dodgers on Saturday saw the Moose Jaw Canucks AAA 15U win 15-6 in their first game, before falling 8-7 in the second game.

The Moose Jaw Canucks AAA 18U were in Regina yesterday to face the Parkland Expos, coming away with a 12-3 victory. 

'Seniors Moose Jobs’ co-ordinator says employment-pairing program doing well 

Barry Watson is the program co-ordinator for the Senior Moose Jobs initiative by the Moose Jaw & District Chamber of Commerce. Watson said the program is seeing “incredible success.” 

“I have recorded 76 seniors on my availability list at this point and we’re starting to get the buy-in by local employers,” Watson explained. “We’ve got 19 of that 76 back into the workforce.” 

RCMP receive 147 total calls for service during Country Thunder 2024

Country Thunder 2024 marked a significant milestone for the famous festival, with this year seeing the One Millionth fan come through the gates. Both famous and infamous for its rowdy party scene, the weekend saw Saskatchewan RCMP officers respond to a total of 147 calls for service.

Calls for service attributed to the influx of people in the area were tracked between Wednesday, July 10 and Monday, July 15. The calls resulted in 33 people taken into custody and six charges laid under Canada's Criminal Code.

4th Avenue SW bridge closed this week for minor repairs

The City of Moose Jaw has issued an advisory to residents that the Thunderbird Viaduct (4th Avenue SW bridge) will be temporarily closed to traffic for five days this week, beginning Monday.

Weather permitting, repairs should be completed by this weekend. Drivers are asked to use Main Street South and 9th Avenue to travel between the North Side and South Hill while this project takes place.

Take 5 - Landfill update

Rob- The city landfill, the other big issue over the course of the past few weeks. The plan was in place, and we were set to build north of Moose Jaw in the RM of Moose Jaw, but the RM rejected the application. So essentially, we’re back to the drawing board? 

Maryse- Not fully, because all the work that the team did in the last year, the consultation we did again, in that process, a lot of listening, a lot of communication back and forth between the RM and us, between the residents and us.  

Take 5 - Souls Harbor Rescue Mission

Rob- Let’s start with the big issue right now, the big event in town, everybody’s talking about it. The Souls Harbor Rescue Mission, the owners and operators of the Riverside Mission, a public meeting about homelessness, addictions and future shelters will be taking place in the coming weeks.
