Service down for Rogers/Tbaytel customers

For all cellular users on multiple cell networks, the only calls out that can be made are for emergencies across Canada.

The issue seems to span across a few Canadian provinces as customers start the day. The issue started in the middle of the night.

There were 1,000 reports of no service or internet for Rogers customers by 5:00 a.m. As of 9:18 a.m. Down Detector is reporting that the issue is broader. It includes Rogers, Fido, Bell, Telus, Virgin, Koodo, and BellMTS. Many companies are also experiencing internet issues. 

Richards named to Lakehead’s Wall of Fame

A hometown hockey hero is being recognized by Lakehead University.

Nicknamed ‘The Kenora Komet’ in his youth for his blistering speed, Kenora’s Jeff Richards has been named to Lakehead University’s Wall of Fame ahead of the 2022-2023 school year, with an official induction ceremony set for October.

The 5’10” forward is Lakehead’s second-leading all-time scorer with 252 points in 170 games and could be considered the best and most impactful player in Thunderwolves history.

Hospital foundation welcomes new Executive Director

The Lake of the Woods District Hospital Foundation welcomes a new leader after a year-long search. Mira Trebilcock has been hired as the foundation’s new Executive Director and steps into her new role today.

The foundation says the Timmins, Ontario native is an experienced non-profit advancement professional with a strong track record of success working in fundraising, business development and communications.

“Healthcare professionals have been unwavering in their commitments to patients, families and communities during these trying years,” says Trebilcock.

Ousting of U.K. PM Boris Johnson won't affect ties with Canada, trade talks

The Canadian government says it is business as usual with the U.K. despite the dramatic ousting of U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson by his party.

Global Affairs Canada and the Department for International Trade signalled Thursday that the relationship with the U.K. will remain strong and that the toppling of Britain's prime minister will not affect Canada's negotiations on a crucial free-trade agreement.

RLMCMH Emergency Department closure avoided, Mamakwa comments on the severity of the situation

There has been a positive update on the RLMCMH Emergency Department closure situation.  

The Red Lake Margaret Cochenour Memorial Hospital (RLMCMH) announced earlier in the week that due to physician and staffing shortages, they were going to be forced to close the Emergency Department for a 12-hour period this evening, July 7. Thankfully, that will no longer have to happen.  

Further openings announced for Whiteshell Provincial Park

Manitoba Parks has announced some additional reopenings in the Whiteshell.

Provincial Road (PR) 307 in Whiteshell Provincial Park is now fully open through the north Whiteshell area from Seven Sisters Falls to Rennie. Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure is continuing ongoing repairs of PR 307 and floodwaters remain on the road in some areas. Expect delays when travelling in the park, use caution and drive slowly when coming up to or passing work crews.

130 years of history lost in Hungry Pug Fire

The building, now known for The Hungry Pug, has a long history of being home to some of Kenora’s favourite restaurants throughout time.  

According to history provided by the Patsiatzis family (current building owners), the building has been home to W.L. Birden Meat Market, King Cash Grocery, Williams Tobacco Shop, Bryce’s Bakery, W.S. Irish Confectionary, McInnes Confectionary, The Salisbury House, Bizzi Bee, Borelli’s, The Pier, and of course, The Hungry Pug.  

A GoFundMe update for those impacted by the Hungry Pug Fire

It's been just over a week since the fire took out the historic building located at 301 Second Street South, the building which was home to The Hungry Pug, Poplar & Birch, and multiple residential units. In that time, four GoFundMe pages were set up for the victims of the fire, all of which have received tremendous support.
