Winnipeg Jets make it official, bringing back Rick Bowness as head coach

Rick Bowness is returning to his roots.

The Winnipeg Jets announced the hiring of Bowness as their head coach on Sunday after several days of speculation.

The 67-year-old Bowness, who becomes the team's eighth head coach in franchise history and third since the club’s relocation to Winnipeg, began his coaching career with the Jets, culminating in 28 games running the bench to close the 1988–89 season.

The former right wing ended his NHL playing career with Winnipeg in the 1982 playoffs.

Sports Update July 4

The Winnipeg Jets did some in-house work during the Canada Day long weekend by announcing the hiring of Rick Bowness as the third head coach since they relocated to Winnipeg. The 67-year-old Bowness spent most of the past three N-H-L seasons coaching Dallas, leading led the Stars to the 2020 Stanley Cup Final in the playoff bubble in Edmonton, where the Stars lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

OPP searching for a missing 16-year-old male

The search for missing 16-year-old Juan Miguel Tan (Rondilla) has come to a tragic end.

Kenora OPP confirmed Wednesday evening that the teenager was located deceased.

Foul play is not suspected, and the family is asking for privacy.

The family thanks the OPP for their work and assistance, and the community for all of their support.

The OPP says no further information will be released.

Woman held hostage during B.C. bank shooting experiencing roller-coaster of emotions

Shelli Fryer was wide awake at 2:54 on Canada Day and hoped the stack of messages piling up in recent days could help her close her eyes.

The 59-year-old Langford, B.C., woman said she's been having trouble sleeping since Tuesday when she was among those held hostage during a violent bank shooting in Saanich. 

The messages pouring in since then, she said, have offered some of the comfort she's sought and commended her bravery during the ordeal.

OPP searching for a missing 60-year-old man

Members of the Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are looking to the public to assist in locating a missing 60-year-old male.

Police are looking for Brian Churchill, who is described as First Nation, 5'8" tall, medium build and mostly bald, with collar length black and grey hair.

He was last seen at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Thursday June 30, 2022, leaving his residence in Keewatin and his vehicle was found abandoned on Highway 17A near Beryl winder Road.

Tunnel Island trail washes out

The City of Kenora says the trail at Tunnel Island has washed out and is now closed until further notice, as crews work to repair the trail.

Signs in the area have been posted, and the City of Kenora thanks the public for their cooperation and patience.

LWDH warns of probable emergency department closures this summer

LWDH is ringing the alarm bells, they warn of emergency department closures this summer. 

In a press release, the Lake of the Woods District Hospital (LWDH) shared that due to a significant lack of Health Human Resources, the Kenora hospital will most likely see temporary emergency department (ED) closures this summer.
