14-year-old charged after death in Wabigoon Lake

A 14-year-old youth has been charged after a ‘violent’ break and enter incident in the Dryden area, which caused the death of a 56-year-old man from Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation.

Police responded to the break and enter report in Wabigoon Lake on May 13, where 56-year-old Gregory George of the same community had suffered serious injuries and later passed away at the Dryden Regional Health Centre.

OPP investigating death behind McDonald’s

Officers with the Kenora OPP say they’re investigating the circumstances surrounding a death behind McDonald’s on Highway 17 over the weekend.

Around 7 p.m. Saturday night, traffic was backed up in the McDonald’s drive-through area as emergency responders worked to find and remove a body from the brush area behind the restaurant.

The name of the deceased has not been released. The Kenora OPP says at this time the death is not considered suspicious, but it remains under investigation.

Gas prices increase two cents overnight

Gas prices in Kenora are up two cents to a new record high of 214.9 per litre.

Gasoline prices jumped 12 cents since June 1, 2022.

Residents in Dryden can expect to pay anywhere from 209.9 to 214.9 for a litre of regular gas.

GasBuddy.com reports gas in Sioux Lookout is 218.0 per litre.

As of June 6th gas in Ignace is 232.9 per litre.

Those heading west to Winnipeg can purchase a litre of regular gasoline for as low as 194.5 and as high as 196.9.

June 6 Sports Update

The Canadian men's soccer team is scheduled to play Thursday in Vancouver, but that game is in serious doubt. The team refused to play Sunday's scheduled World Cup warm-up match against Panama amid a contract dispute between the players and Canada Soccer. The game was cancelled less than two hours before kickoff.

"I believe it misses the mark" says Melillo about newly proposed national handgun freeze

New firearm-control legislation was tabled on Monday by the federal Liberals. The proposed legislation would see a national freeze on importing, buying, selling or otherwise transferring handguns, and other restrictions.  

Kenora Mp Eric Melillo says that he agrees with certain aspects of the legislation, but that he cannot fully support the tabled bill.  

NWHU warns of health risks related to flooding

Public Health officials are offering advice to residents in the Kenora area who may be returning to their homes after evacuating due to the severe flooding in the area.

On May 27, leadership with the City of Kenora reopened a number of roadways in the city’s evacuation zone north of the by-pass, allowing residents access back to 223 of the 312 properties that were affected by Kenora’s original evacuation order issued on May 13.
