Proposed Alberta bill would change the election date and allow more provincial control during emergencies

A proposed bill from Alberta's provincial government would change the date of provincial election, and introduce a system for the Province to take control of emergency response efforts.

Premier Danielle Smith was joined by several provincial ministers and officials in announcing the Emergency Statutes Amendment Act, 2024 (Bill 21), on May 9.

The premier explained that the intention of the new bill is to give the province the ability to act quickly during situations where time is of the essence.

$9.5M settlement proposed in Young Canadians abuse class action lawsuit

A tentative settlement has been proposed in the Calgary Stampede Young Canadians lawsuit.

The class-action lawsuit was filed over the Calgary Stampede Foundation having allegedly allowed the sexual abuse of young boys who were students of the Young Canadians School of Performing Arts

For decades, youths from in and around Calgary have performed with the Young Canadians at the Calgary Stampede Grandstand each year.

In 2018, former staffer Phillip Heerema pled guilty to charges related to the sexual abuse of young boys during his time with the organization.

Several winning Alberta lottery tickets currently unclaimed

Check those lottery tickets, there were a few big LOTTO 6/49 wins from Alberta-bought tickets over the Easter long weekend which are still unclaimed.

That includes the $1 million Gold Ball draw, won by a ticket purchased in Calgary.  

The winning ticket was 33707194-03. 

Two Alberta-sold tickets also won "5/6 Main draw numbers + the Bonus number" worth $59,326.50 each.

Those numbers were 7, 12, 25, 29, 39, 43 and the Bonus 23. 

Another five Alberta tickets won $25,000 Guaranteed SuperDraws.

Concerns raised over anti-teacher signs displayed across from Okotoks school

A local mother is sharing her concern and disappointment with signs posted near an Okotoks high school.

The sandwich board, displayed on the driveway of a residence across from the school, bear messages insulting and criticizing teachers, with one side "free new parking in front of small doors, can't fix stupid," with the other side calling for teachers to be "jailed for putting union signs in our school windows."

One local parent of children who attend the school, who wishes to remain anonymous, says the signs are only doing harm, and not just to teachers.

Okotoks council passes by-election bylaw ahead of 2025 election

With the next municipal election being held next year, the Town of Okotoks is getting some housekeeping items taken care of.

At their latest meeting, town council approved an amendment to the Election Procedures Bylaw.

Legislative Policy Services Manager Cathy Duplessis explained that a review of Bylaw 10-24 found that some changes were in order when it came to by-elections.

Locals mourn the loss of renowned Foothills animal advocate

Earlier this week, Pound Rescue in Okotoks announced the passing of their founder, Dr. Gabriele Barrie.

An outspoken animal advocate, Barrie founded the organization in 1994 with a philosophy of making every possible effort to save the lives of animals in need.

Compassion was always the core of Barrie's work. Pound Rescue's Facebook page contains nine years' worth of posts archiving the stories of animals taken in, often abandoned, sick, or injured, with the intention of giving them a better life in a loving home.

Okotoks deer finds itself in a tangle

An Okotoks deer has gotten itself into a tangle.

Residents have reported seeing a deer with some kind of twine tangled up in its antlers.

It's not unheard of; in the past locals have shared photos of deer with Halloween cobwebs or Christmas lights in their antlers.

Residents are advised not to approach the animals, and instead call the proper authorities if the animal needs help.

Alberta Institute for Wildlife Conservation can be called in the case of injured or orphaned wildlife at (403) 946-2361.

Okotoks RCMP report an increase in 'sextortion' cases involving youth

RCMP in Okotoks are cautioning residents of an increase in compromising pictures being shared among youth.

In their latest Mountie Minute release, they report that the increase has led to "an alarming increase in extortion cases."

The use of intimate pictures and videos for blackmail is commonly referred to as "sextortion," and often involves extortionists demanding money or more images from the victim.
