High number of patients at Wildlife Haven is overwhelming
Although the wildlife animal rescue in Île-des-Chênes is often hopping with activity, it seems to be exceptionally busy these days.
Wildlife Animal Hospital is taking in many patients with a variety of needs and last week, the medical team had to pull the executive director, Zoe Nakata, in to assist with an emergency surgery.
Nakata does not usually help in this area and found it to be quite an experience.
Barrel racing is rising in popularity, says local event organizer
Horses, barrels and riders will be found this evening at the Hanover Agricultural grounds in Grunthal as the Barrel Racing Series continues.
Carollyne Kehler is the organizer for this year’s “Ride Like a Mother” series and she has noticed the sport gaining in popularity.
Pistons prepare for Kids Power Camp
The Steinbach Pistons are kicking into high gear, even though ice hockey might be the last thing on anyone’s mind during this intense heat.
“As much as we all want to enjoy the summer that we're getting right now, the Pistons, we’re always thinking hockey,” says marketing director Jamie Roy. “So, the next thing is our Kids Power Camp.”

The Taste of Summer Charity Barbecue on Wednesday raised $1,943.80 in support of Island Breeze, the recipient of this week’s barbecue.

Work continues to keep Hanover Ag grounds a busy place year-round
The Hanover Ag. Society continues to work on turning the exhibition park in Grunthal into a place that can easily be used throughout the year.
And President Curtis Dawydiuk says the vision is to have the place used as much as possible, during every season.
“There was a vision many years ago of expanding and making it a year-round facility venue and we're starting to see some of that fruit,” he says. “It's really exciting.”
4-H clubs wrap up another season in Manitoba
Manitoba 4-H clubs continue to evolve, adjusting programming that teaches young people a variety of life skills that are relevant.
Carla Campbell has children involved in local 4-H, and she says there is so much to learn that boosts self-confidence.
Summer in the City gains non-profit status, charitable organization
Some key changes are happening for Steinbach’s annual summer festival which has now achieved the status of a non-profit, charitable organization.
Board chairperson Audrey Harder says this means they can now access federal and provincial grants, which they could not do while it was operating under the umbrella of the City of Steinbach.
And it means the festival cannot become a money-maker.
Golfers tee off to support local cancer patients
A special event is coming up next month that will make a difference for people in southeastern Manitoba who are dealing with cancer.
The Ladies Golf League at Lake of the Sandhills Golf Course in Buffalo Point has found a fun way to raise money for cancer while keeping funds local.
