Water testing blitz continues

The Ministry of Agriculture's water testing blitz is underway.

Livestock producers are encouraged to bring in a 500 millilitre to a litre sample in a clear plastic container.

The water should be taken directly from the water source that livestock are using and should include your name, sample date, the water source
and location.

Megan Roger a  Livestock and Feed Extension Specialist says water testing is done free of charge at the Ministry of Agriculture Regional offices or at specific rural locations during the water blitz.

Stampede's Farm Family Awards handed out

The Calgary Stampede has again named the families who best typify the value of the family farmer to society.

The Farm Family Awards are handed out at a special event on the Monday of the Stampede.

They are nominated by their local Ag Service Board.

At the ceremony and brunch families meet with BMO Bank of Montreal representatives, government officials, Calgary Stampede Board Members, and Stampede Royalty. 

Each family member receives free admission to the park, a Farm Family Awards limited edition pin and afternoon rodeo tickets. 

Ottawa is stepping in to end the BC Port Strike

Labour Minister Seamus O'Regan gave a federal mediator last night 24 hours to send him recommendations on ending the strike. 

Over 7000 dock workers walked off the job on July 1st after failing to reach an agreement on wages and contracting out with the BCMEA.

The impact of the ongoing strike has meant the loss of export capacity on the west coast.

The Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters Association had called for government action to prevent permanent damage to our economy and to Canada’s reputation as a serious trading partner.

Key funding announced for Canada's Dairy Industry

On Tuesday, Ottawa announced $7.5 million in funding for the Dairy Farmers of Canada to help support sustainable development in the dairy industry.

DFC will look at ways to improve the environmental and economic sustainability, and resilience of the Canadian dairy industry by developing and implementing
plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and sequester carbon, while improving the health and welfare of cows and the quality of the milk produced.

Changes announced to help the province's beef industry

Alberta is raising the individual and joint membership loan limits for the Feeder Associations Guarantee Regulation.

The changes excluding advances will increase the loan limits from $2 million to $3 million.

Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation RJ Sigurdson says the amendments ensure thousands of producers across the province have access to the capital they need to keep producing beef.

Nutrien to curtail operations at Cory potash mine due to BC port strike

The impact of the ongoing BC port strike is having major implications.

Nutrien announced yesterday that it has curtailed production at its Cory potash mine due to the loss of export capacity at the Port of Vancouver's Canpotex Neptune terminal.

Ken Seitz, Nutrien’s President and CEO says if the strike continues it could also impact production at their other potash mines in 
the province. 

Canada's Agriculture Minister first woman ever to chair the FAO

Federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau chaired the biennial Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations Conference last week in Italy.

This year's theme was water resource management. 

Bibeau was the first woman to ever chair the FAO conference and the first Canadian to do it since 1997.

During her visit, she also met with Italian agri-food stakeholders, Canadian industry associations, and Canadians working at Rome-based international organizations and agencies. 

New fungicide for sclerotinia control on the way for 2024

Syngenta Canada has launched a new fungicide for sclerotinia control in Canola that will be commercially available in Western Canada for the 2024 growing season.

 Jon Cressman, Product Lead, Fungicides, and Insecticides, Syngenta Canada says Miravis® Star has been shown to perform consistently even under high Sclerotinia disease pressure conditions.

In a series of small plot trials, Miravis® Star demonstrated a 23.7% yield advantage over untreated at the standard rate of 0.4 L/ac.1
