Canadian Seed Growers Association ready for larger role

The Canadian Seed Growers Association (CSGA) has a new affiliation agreement with its seven regional branches.

The agreement includes the Alberta-British Columbia Seed Growers, Saskatchewan Seed Growers and the Manitoba Seed Grower Associations.

CSGA Executive Director Doug Miller says with the industry going through a seed industry modernization initiative it's important to have unity and a clear message.

Canada launches African Swine Fever prevention and preparedness program

No case has ever been found in Canada, but the disease has had a major impact in countries like Asia, Europe and the Carribean.

African Swine Fever is a fatal swine disease.

Earlier this week, Ottawa announced applications are now open for Agriculture Canada's African Swine Fever prevention and preparedness program. 

Funding for the new program will support projects such as biosecurity assessments and improvements, wild pig management, the retrofit of existing abattoirs, sector analysis and ASF-related research.

SARM delegates tackle some key resolutions

RM's from around the province are gathering in Saskatoon for their annual Mid-term Convention. 

Yesterday, delegates reviewed 26 resolutions one of which focused around the critical shortage of healthcare workers in the province.

Delegates voted 99 per cent in favor of SARM calling on the government to increase the available training seats and infrastructure in the province for Primary Care Paramedics, LPN's and the bridging programs for LPN to RN qualifications. 

New plant-based seafood alternatives to hit Canadian grocery stores

With the help of Protein Industries Canada a new line of products developed by partners Konscious Foods, Merit Functional Foods and Canadian Pacifico Seaweeds.

Konscious Foods is using Merit’s pea and canola proteins, and Canadian Pacifico Seaweeds’ seaweed ingredients, to develop more than 20 plant-based seafood alternative products.

The $15.3 million project includes a $5.5 million investment from Protein Industries Canada with the other three partners putting in the remaining $9.8 million.

Barlow pleased to see Bill C-234 moving forward

Bill C-234 is headed back to the House of Common's (HoC) for third and final reading. 

The private members bill put forward by Conservative MP Ben Lobb would exempt farm use of propane and natural gas used in grain drying and barns.

John Barlow, the Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Agri-Food says the bill moved through the House Standing Committee on Agriculture last week.

Organic Connections Conference brings together all aspects of the industry

The largest organic conference in Western Canada opened today in Saskatoon.

Canada holds the title of being the fifth largest organic consumption market in the world, and global demand continues to increase. 

Production varies across the country, in Manitoba organic operations in 2020 totalled 207 including livestock and crop production with total acreage at 102,612 acres.

In Alberta, the total number of organic operations in 2020 was reported at 725, with 607,249 acres.
