Nutrien reports strong third quarter

Nutrien is reporting third quarter net earnings for 2022 of $1.6 billion (U.S.) dollars.

That includes a non-cash impairment reversal of $330 million relating to Nutrien's Phosphate operations. 

Ken Seitz, Nutrien’s President and CEO says they delivered record earnings in 2022 due to the strength of agriculture fundamentals, higher fertilizer prices and excellent retail performance. 

He notes that during the third quarter, Nutrien saw a temporary reduction in potash purchasing in North America and Brazil. 

Federal dollars will help Canadian Foodgrains Bank ease hunger crisis around Horn of Africa

The Canadian Foodgrains Bank is a Christian response to hunger.

The Federal Government recently announced $14 million dollars for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank to help respond to the deepening food crisis around the Horn of Africa.

Musu Taylor Lewis, the CFB Director of Resources and Public Engagement says the money that's coming in from the federal government is a key response to the hunger crisis that is going on around the world right now.

Fertilizer Canada now part of the GGC's "Road to 2050" climate solution initiative

President and CEO Karen Proud says at Fertilizer Canada, they know it is not enough to talk about how we want the world to be; we have to take action to make that world a reality.

Prairie-based bison products hitting store shelves

More and more consumers are looking at healthy meal choices.

As a result, bison is becoming more prominent on grocery store shelves.

Bison is known to be a lean meat that is high in protein and nutrients, and low in calories making it a good dietary choice.

Federated Co-op, in collaboration with Wanuskewin Heritage Park, has launched a new line of bison products in Co-op food stores across Western Canada, with a portion of the proceeds going back to the non-profit park.  

Consultations planned on school food programs

Stats show that one in five children in Canada are at risk of going to school hungry on any given day.

This week, the Federal Government announced consultations to develop a pan-Canadian school food policy and explore how more Canadian children can receive nutritious food at school.

The consultations will include roundtable discussions with key stakeholder groups, including children and youth.

Weekly cattle and hog prices mixed

Highlights from Cattle Marketing Report:

Canfax reporting over 42 thousand head of feeder cattle were sold last week, an increase of about 2200 head from the previous week.

Feeder steers prices ranged from $336.71 per cwt for the 300-400lb weight category, to $232.50 per cwt for the 800-900lb weight category.  

Prices for feeder heifers ranged from $257.03 per cwt for the 300-400lb weight category, to $210.00 per cwt for the 800+lb weight category.

Manitoba Crop Alliance announces crop committee delegate results

Manitoba Crop Alliance (MCA) is pleased to announce the results of the nomination process for delegate positions on its four crop committees. The nomination period ran from Sept. 1 to Oct. 30, 2022.
 
In total, 17 farmer members were nominated for the 17 available delegate positions across the four crop committees and are thereby elected by acclamation. Among those 17 delegates, seven are new to their respective committees and 10 are incumbents.
 

Sask Wheat joins Grain Growers of Canada

The Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission is now officially a member of the Grain Growers of Canada.

The two organizations are focused on improving on-farm sustainability and competitiveness of the Canadian agriculture sector. 

Earlier this year, Sask Wheat partnered with the GGC on their ‘Road to 2050’ climate solutions initiative. 

GGC Chair Andre Harpe says adding their voice to the table means that we are an even stronger advocate for grain farmers

The GGC now represents approximately 90,000 grain farmers across the country.

Alberta wheat and barley farmers vote in favour of amalgamation

The Alberta Barley Commission and the Alberta Wheat Commission releasing the preliminary results today.

Two plebiscites were held one for each commodity where a majority of eligible producers voted in favour of amalgamating the two commissions.

Alberta Barley Chair, Tara Sawyer says a clear direction was provided by both wheat and barley farmers on the preferred path forward for the organizations.
 
The preliminary results from each plebiscite was 89 per cent of barley farmers and 88 per cent of wheat farmers in support of forming one commission.
