Radio broadcasts get Scripture into the hearts of North Korean Christians

Imagine tuning into a new channel on the radio and suddenly hearing these slow words:

“For …

“… God …

“… so …

“… loved … the … world.”

What are you listening to? It’s the Bible, spoken so that you can write it down. This type of scripture broadcast is one way Christians outside of North Korea send God’s Word over the border, where other Christians can scribble out their own copies of Scripture.

The shores of lake contentment, part two

Philippians 4:11–13

What a beautiful scene in the soul is Lake Contentment! Undisturbed by outside noises brought on by the jackhammers of exaggeration, those who enjoy the lake know what relaxation is all about. They know nothing of any winter of discontent—or spring or fall or summer, for that matter. Such an existence breeds security and happiness.

Paul lived on that lake once he got his life squared away. He’s the one, remember, who wrote:

Peace amidst unpleasant circumstances

Acts 19:23–31

After Paul had been willing to stay at the task in Ephesus even with the dream of going to Rome on his heart (Acts 19:23), “about that time...” That’s the way it happens. Just about the time you get out of your prayer closet and you’ve got it all worked out, everything breaks loose. Look at the rest of verse 23:

There occurred no small disturbance concerning the Way [which was a first-century label for Christianity].

Happy Birthday, Celsius! Canada marks 50 years of metric-Imperial measurements

Happy Birthday, Celsius!

Environment Canada's use of Celsius turns 50 years old in 2025.

It was the catalyst of a lengthy national metric conversion that abruptly ended a decade after it began.

The result is seen and felt every day. Canadians wear clothes measured in inches and buy gas by the litre. They drink from millilitre beer cans and step on bathroom scales in pounds. They eat cereal by the gram and sub sandwiches by the foot.

Give someone an inch, and they'll take a kilometre.

Year in review: A look at national news events in December 2024

A look at national news events in December 2024:

- Belgium grants sex workers full labour rights, including health insurance, paid leave and pensions. The law establishing key rights including refusing clients and stopping acts at any time comes after the decriminalization of sex work in 2022. Employers must meet strict licensing and safety standards, while unregulated hiring may be penalized. Advocates hail the law as groundbreaking while critics worry undocumented workers remain vulnerable.
