Alberta Grains names acting chair as Tara Sawyer runs for UCP in Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills by-election
Scott Jespersen has been named the acting chair for Alberta Grains.
Chair Tara Sawyer is taking a leave of absence effective immediately following her appointment by Premier Danielle Smith as the United Conservative Party (UCP) candidate for the Olds-Didsbury-Three Hills by-election.
Sawyer, a wheat and barley farmer from Acme, Alberta, was elected as Alberta Grains’ inaugural chair in 2023 after the amalgamation of the Alberta Wheat and Barley Commissions.

Union head says new federal government needs to regain public servants' trust
The head of one of Canada's largest federal unions says the federal government needs to focus on repairing the relationship between public servants and management.
Nathan Prier, president of the Canadian Association of Professional Employees, said this is a "delicate moment" and that new Treasury Board President Shafqat Ali has his work cut out for him.
Prier said the Trudeau government made several questionable decisions that eroded trust among workers. They included a messy return-to-office rollout that was conducted without consulting employees, he said.
Bank of Canada rate cut odds for June fall after April inflation data
Signs that underlying inflation was picking up in April put the Bank of Canada in a tricky position ahead of its June interest rate decision, with some economists arguing a second straight pause is now more likely.
"It is going to make it a much more challenging backdrop for the Bank of Canada to continue cutting rates, at least in the near term," said Benjamin Reitzes, managing director of Canadian rates and macro strategist at BMO Capital Markets.

Prayer is the act of faith that believes God is not deaf. That He lovingly and graciously hears our voices and attends to the cries of our hearts.
City of GP assessors canvassing neighbourhoods to update tax assessment records
The City of Grande Prairie begins neighbourhood canvassing on May 26, followed by exterior property photos from late June to August. This work ensures property records and tax assessments remain accurate and up to date.
“The neighbourhood canvassing helps us maintain accurate property records, which assists in creating property assessments that reflect market conditions while ensuring fairness and transparency for all residents,” said Scott Smith, Assessment and Taxation Director. “We appreciate the community's cooperation and understanding as we carry out this task.”
County of GP awards operating assistance grants to 64 community groups
The County of Grande Prairie has awarded $227,816 in annual operating assistance and cemetery grants to support 64 non-profit organizations and volunteer groups.
“Our communities thrive because of the dedication and hard work of local volunteers and non-profit groups,” said Reeve Bob Marshall. “This funding is one of the many ways the County supports the organizations that make our region a vibrant and connected place to live.”
Some of the significant grants include:
