Cyclist braving elements to raise funds for autoimmune disease

Tyler J. Ashton, originally from Port Coquitlam, B.C., made a stop in Winnipeg Monday morning on his way to cycle across Canada for a good cause. 

"I started on March 1 on mile marker zero on Vancouver Island, right next to the Terry Fox statue," says Ashton. "It was kind of an ode to him. We came from the same hometown. The ride has been good."

Ashton pulled into Winnipeg this past weekend and made a stop at the CHVN studio to share why he is cycling at the end of winter into the early spring, with many days below freezing across the prairies. 

Campground reservations open today for Manitoba provincial parks

It's an exciting day for camping enthusiasts across Manitoba as the province's campground reservation site officially opens for the season.

As in previous years, reservations will be staggered over five days to accommodate the high demand and make it easier for Manitobans to book their favourite campground. 

Starting at 7 a.m. today, the province will take reservations for all cabins, yurts, and group-use areas.

Two men hospitalized after violent altercation in downtown Winnipeg

Two people are recovering after an altercation turned violent Friday afternoon. 

Just after 3 p.m. on Friday, Winnipeg police say two separate groups were involved in an argument that eventually escalated to a point where a 19-year-old man and a 30-year-old man pulled out weapons and began assaulting one another.

Faces painted, spirits high: Hundreds attend rally for Canada at Manitoba Legislature

Hundreds of people gathered at the Manitoba Legislature Sunday afternoon to rally for Canada.

"We love Canada," said Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew at the Rally. "We will always be the true north, strong and free, and we will never be the 51st state."

People donned red and white with painted maple leaves on their faces as the legislature transformed into a place for fun and celebration.

The rally featured food trucks, face painting, street hockey, bouncy castles, an obstacle course and musical performances by Fred Penner, DJ Mama Cutsworth and others.

Party leaders focus policy pitches on rent control, addictions treatment

The NDP promised to protect tenants through national rent control while the Conservatives focused their campaign trail message on addictions treatment Sunday.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said in Halifax in the morning that his party would tie federal housing funding for provinces and municipalities to tenant protection policies like rent control.

The NDP says housing and rent prices in Canada have doubled since 2015 and the average asking rent hit $2,109 per month in January.

Ottawa man, 31, charged after Parliament Hill lockdown

Police say they've charged a 31-year-old Ottawa man with several offences following an incident that placed an area of Parliament Hill under lockdown on Saturday.

Ottawa police said in a media statement Sunday that a man entered East Block in downtown Ottawa at 2:40 p.m. Saturday and started issuing threats to those inside.

Security officials isolated the man in a security screening area while police evacuated the building, which mostly houses offices for senators and their staff.

Police said the man surrendered peacefully after hours of negotiations.
