Fire Prevention Week wraps up with open house at Winnipeg fire halls today

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) is inviting residents to visit their local fire halls today as part of an open house event, running from noon to 4 p.m.

Every WFPS station across the city will welcome visitors, offering a chance to meet first responders and learn essential fire safety tips. Attendees will gain valuable information on smoke alarms, home escape plans, and fire prevention strategies.

River levels to drop in Winnipeg prompting WPS to remind Winnipeggers to be safe around bodies of water

River levels in Winnipeg are expected to drop significantly over the next few weeks. 

As a result, city boat launches are being removed and the Winnipeg Police Service is reminding Winnipeggers to be safe around bodies of water.

"We advise all boaters to remove their boats and docks by October 15," said the Winnipeg Police Service in a post on X.

The Ties that Bind: Wag-Qaumajuq celebrates motherhood with MOTHERGROUND

Opening on October 12th and going until March 31, 2025, there is an exhibit that is happening at the Wag-Qaumajuq that explores the idea of Motherhood. 

Called MOTHERGROUND, this exhibit features the work of Winnipeg, photographer, sculpture, videographer, and multi-disciplinary artist Dominique Rey. 

Lane closures expected next week as preparations get underway to reopen Portage & Main

As the city prepares to reopen Winnipeg's iconic Portage & Main intersection motorists can expect delays in the area starting as early as next week. 

Over the next four weeks, as traffic signal crews start some pre-construction work sections of both roads' curb and median lanes will be closed intermittently.

WFPS battles five overnight fires across the city

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was kept busy Thursday night into Friday morning battling five separate fires in less than eight hours. 

The first fire broke out in a single-storey commercial warehouse just before 7 p.m. on Thursday. 

Smoke and flames were coming from the building when crews arrived. However, they were able to get it under control quickly. 

No injuries were reported.

About an hour later, shortly after 8 p.m. a second fire broke out in a single-family bungalow in the 100 block of Dearborn Avenue.
