IIU looking for witnesses to police shooting in Winnipeg

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is asking for witnesses to come forward as it investigates the fatal shooting of a man by police in Winnipeg earlier this week.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday afternoon, began when Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) officers responded to reports of an armed male at an apartment building in the 800 block of Main Street.

Province announces expanded access to addictions treatment through virtual walk-in

Manitobans searching for addictions treatment can now access any of the Rapid Access to Addictions Medicine (RAAM) clinics virtually.

The province announced Wednesday, that Manitobans can connect with any RAAM clinic without an appointment using any smartphone, tablet or computer.

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew continues to enjoy a honeymoon with voters one year after his NDP government was elected, but there are challenges ahead in fulfilling promises to improve health care and balance the budget.

One of the things Kinew says he has learned since the Oct. 3 vote last year is that changes can't be made quickly.

The province has seen hundreds of new health-care workers hired as part of Kinew's election promise to "fix" health care. But more workers, equipment and space are needed.

Cooking fire leads to evacuation of 14-storey apartment complex in Sturgeon Creek

No one was injured following an apartment fire Wednesday evening that forced numerous people out of their suites.

The blaze broke out just before 8 p.m. in a 14-storey apartment building in the 3000 block of Portage Avenue.

When firefighters entered the complex, they found smoke coming from one of the suites. Using handlines, they were able to get the fire under control within 20 minutes. 

Some residents evacuated from the building, while others sheltered in place. No injuries were reported.

Siloam CEO says good start but more needed, after Winnipeg commits to affordable housing

The CEO of Siloam Mission in Winnipeg is weighing in on the recent announcement made by the city regarding increasing affordable housing over the next 3 years. 

The Government of Canada and the City of Winnipeg recently announced $25 million in funding which will provide over 1,000 new housing units to the city, including 597 affordable units.

Deadly police confrontation in North End after man wields weapons in apartment building

A man is dead following a confrontation in the hallways of an apartment building in the city's North End on Wednesday afternoon.

The Winnipeg Police Service says that around 12:30 p.m., North District General Patrol officers responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a man armed with edged weapons at a building in the 800 block of Main Street.

Acting Chief Art Stannard emphasized that all reports consisted of people saying the man was swinging an edged weapon and banging on different doors.

Province announces new playground near housing complex in Tuxedo

Children living in Tuxedo will soon have a new place to play. 

The Manitoba government announced Tuesday, that they plan to construct a new playground near the Edgeland, a Manitoba Housing complex in Tuxedo, that contains 124 rental units and one commercial unit.

"Public playgrounds play a vital role in connecting families and friends,” said Premier Wab Kinew. “We are committed to working with the children in Tuxedo to get this important project done. By working together, we can create a place for families and children to gather and get active.”

Electrical fire causes significant damage to family home

A fire Tuesday afternoon caused significant damage to a home near Valley Gardens.

The fire broke out just after 1 p.m. in a single-family bungalow in the 1000 block of Simpson Avenue.

Heavy smoke was pouring out of the house when crews arrived. Firefighters began battling the fire from inside the home. It took about a half hour to get under control.

Residents of the home were able to evacuate before crews arrived. One person was assessed at the scene but did not require a trip to the hospital.
