The Manitoba government is investing a significant amount into ovarian cancer research over the next few years.
Health, Seniors and Long-Term Care Minister Uzoma Asagwara announced Wednesday that $1 million will be invested over the next three years in research through Ovarian Cancer Canada and the Manitoba Ovarian Cancer Research group.

ER visits for pneumonia doubled last fall, CIHI data shows
The number of emergency department visits for pneumonia more than doubled last fall over the previous year, the Canadian Institute for Health Information says.
The new data released Thursday said young people between five and 19 years old were the hardest hit.
"This is actually the largest increase in pneumonia-related emergency department visits that we've seen post-COVID," said Tanya Khan, CIHI's manager of hospital data advancement and engagement, in an interview.
Canadian politicians condemn shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk
Politicians in Canada are speaking out about political violence after Charlie Kirk, a conservative activist and close ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, was shot and killed Wednesday at a Utah college event.
Prime Minister Mark Carney offered condolences to Kirk's family and friends.
"There is no justification for political violence and every act of it threatens democracy," he said on social media.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said Kirk's shooting must be strongly denounced.

Westbound lanes of North Perimeter closed at Lagimodiere after serious crash
A serious crash has shut down the westbound lanes of the North Perimeter Highway at Highway 59, also known as Lagimodiere Boulevard.
Manitoba Infrastructure confirmed the closure in an email Tuesday morning, citing a serious motor vehicle collision as the cause.
The Winnipeg Police Service says officers are on scene investigating and are asking drivers to avoid the area.
In a post on X, police said the lanes are expected to be closed for approximately three hours. Motorists are urged to use alternate routes in the meantime.
Woman charged after inbound flight from Winnipeg leads to $140K drug seizure
At 8 p.m. on Sept. 7, Oxford House RCMP received a report from a First Nation Safety Officer that a 37-year-old female, travelling from Winnipeg, was in possession of a large quantity of drugs.
The suspect was transported to the Oxford House RCMP Detachment and turned over to police.
Following the investigation, officers seized approximately 251 grams of suspected crack cocaine, 24 grams of cocaine and 200 illicit pills believed to be oxycodone. The estimated community street value of these drugs is approximately $140,000.
West End residents displaced after house fire on Furby Street
A fire Tuesday evening has displaced some West End residents.
The blaze broke out just before 9:30 p.m. in a house in the 500 block of Furby Street.
Heavy flames and smoke were coming from the house when crews arrived. Firefighters used aerial ladders to fight the fire from above.
It was declared under control shortly after 11 p.m.
One firefighter was assessed by paramedics, but did not require a trip to the hospital.
The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team responded to provide temporary support for displaced residents.
Calling all dogs and owners: Paws take over Riverview Health Centre
What began with one client’s simple wish to be around dogs has grown into a cherished tradition at Riverview Health Centre.
On Saturday, Sept. 20, dozens of dogs will line the street around the facility for the annual Riverview Health Centre Puppy Parade.
The event was created during the COVID-19 pandemic when pet therapy was cancelled due to restrictions. Although those restrictions are now gone, the parade is something that residents continue to look forward to.
