Winnipeg and southern Manitoba will most likely receive a lot of rain in a short period of time later in the afternoon, throughout the evening and overnight.

"It's a fairly moisture-laden airmass that's moving up from the United States," says Meteorologist with Environment Canada (EC), Chris Stammers. "Looks like there's going to be some thunderstorm activity forming, it's already forming in North Dakota and that's going to be moving northward throughout the day."

Stammers says that southern Manitoba could see roughly 50 mm of rain within a short period of time. 

The Independent Investigation Unit is investigating after a man died while in police custody.

Just before 4 a.m. on Sunday, members of the Winnipeg Police Service arrested a man in the 100 block of King Edward Street East on an outstanding warrant.

The man was brought to police headquarters at 245 Smith Street and turned over to the Central Processing Unit. He was medically cleared by a CPU paramedic and put in a holding room.

A few hours later, around 7:30 a.m., while conducting a scheduled arousal check, the man was found unresponsive in the holding room.

The job's not done yet, but commuters can now use a new overpass to cross and access the South Perimeter Highway.

Work began in the spring of 2022 on a new interchange for St. Mary's Road and the Perimeter Highway. The project was announced in 2020 by the Conservative government of the time, part of a larger initiative called the "Perimeter Freeway Initiative."

A toddler is dead after being struck by a car in a northern Manitoba community.

God's Lake Narrows RCMP say a pick-up truck struck the 21-month-old in the child's yard at around 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12.

The driver, a 45-year-old man who lives in the same residence, rushed the boy to the local Nursing Station, where he was pronounced  dead.

No charges have been laid.

The investigation continues.

A fire early Saturday morning at a commercial and residential building in the 200 block of Atlantic Avenue has claimed the lives of two people, with Winnipeg police now treating the incident as a potential homicide.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre will gather with his caucus on Parliament Hill today as he prepares to make another push to topple the Liberal government as early as next week.

The one-day caucus meeting ahead of the return of Parliament Monday will begin with a public address by Poilievre, who has maintained his party's commanding lead in the polls throughout the summer.

They are the last of the major parties to have a fall strategy session after the Liberals, NDP and Bloc Québécois all met last week.

Passengers with plans to fly on Canada's largest airline can breathe a sigh of relief after Air Canada said Sunday it has reached a tentative agreement with the union representing more than 5,200 of its pilots. 

The news of a preliminary deal with the Air Line Pilots Association came shortly after midnight on Sunday when the airline issued a press release just days ahead of a potential work stoppage for Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge. 

The tentative deal averts a strike or lockout that could have begun on Wednesday, with flight cancellations expected before then.

A Winnipeg woman has been identified as the victim of a fatal collision that occurred at the intersection of Portage Avenue and Bedson Street on Friday morning.

Emergency responders were called to the scene at around 7:39 a.m. on Sept. 13 after reports of a serious crash involving a pedestrian.
