Goldeyes fall to Fargo-Moorhead in series finale

The Winnipeg Goldeyes (49-40) lost a close affair Thursday evening, dropping the series finale to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 4-3 at Newman Outdoor Field.

CN, CPKC prepare to restart railways after Ottawa steps in to end stoppage

Canada's two biggest railways say they’re preparing to get trains back on track after Ottawa intervened to end an unprecedented labour impasse that disrupted business across the country and cancelled commutes for thousands.

Canadian National Railway Co., in a statement Thursday, said it has ended the lockout of workers that began earlier in the day.

The move came shortly after Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon said he has asked the Canada Industrial Relations Board to impose binding arbitration to end the dispute and get the trains running.

RCMP working with international police amid new slew of threats targeting synagogues

Mounties say they are responding to additional bomb threats made across Canada today that they believe are linked to similar threats made the day before. 

RCMP say they responded to the threats alongside local police at synagogues, museums, malls, ports, art galleries and more.

RCMP say they are working closely with domestic and international police to identify who may be involved in the threats, and that they will provide an update on their investigation when it can. 

Southdale store evacuated after man allegedly tries to set fire to inside

Winnipeg police and fire crews are on scene at a Winnipeg Walmart on Thursday morning after a man who was kicked out of the store returned and tried to set fire to it.

Witnesses say that the man was at the front of the store on the corner of Lakewood Boulevard and Fermor Avenue trying to steal items when security confronted him. He began to scream at security and as he was removed and threatened that he would return to burn the store down.

“It was a really nice marriage for us to work together,” says Flipside’s General Manager Lisa Rumpel about the partnership between the organizations.  

 

National rail shutdown begins as employees locked out at both major Canadian railways

In a first for Canada, freight traffic on its two largest railways has simultaneously ground to a halt, threatening to upend supply chains trying to move forward from pandemic-related disruptions and a port strike last year.

In the culmination of months of increasingly bitter negotiations, Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. locked out 9,300 engineers, conductors and yard workers after the parties disagreed on a new contract before the midnight deadline.

Kinew says legislation will allow municipalities to opt out of Winnipeg Metro Region

The NDP government will be introducing legislation this fall, which if approved, will allow municipalities the right to opt out of the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region. 

Premier Wab Kinew says this is a hot topic, that he claims was started under the previous government. In recent weeks, the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region has taken heat for Plan20-50, which Executive Director Jennifer Freeman refers to as "a long-term regional plan for the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region to help the 18 municipalities work together."

Business groups call on federal government to prevent rail work stoppage

A coalition of business groups is calling on the federal government to prevent a work stoppage at Canada's two biggest railways.

A phased shutdown of the networks at Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. is already underway as the clock ticks down on contract talks with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference.

Unless deals are reached, rail service at both companies is poised to stop at 12:01 a.m. ET on Thursday.
