This May long weekend brought sunshine instead of the usual showers southeast Manitoba is used to seeing.  

Friends and families took advantage of the holiday and weather. Many pulled out their barbecues, and others went to the sky on swings at the park.

The May long weekend is inching closer. From escape rooms to golf, there are many ways to spend it. 

Here is a rundown of local activities and sights to check out and what will be open on Victoria Day. 

Steinbach store hours will vary: 

• Clearspring Centre will be open from 12 PM to 5 PM. 

• Sobeys, Superstore and Walmart are open from 9 AM to 6 PM. 

• Canadian Tire will be closed all day. 

When the bridge on Hwy. 311 burned last Wednesday evening, many had to think about rerouting, including the Hanover School Division (HSD) buses. 

Robert Warkentin, Head of HSD Bus Division says the fire occurred between two communities in HSD’s catchment area, Landmark and New Bothwell. 

History, rides, community, celebration and of course, cake. That is what Mennonite Heritage Village’s (MHV) Manitoba Day Celebration is all about.   

Steinbach and area residents visited the MHV on Saturday to celebrate Manitoba’s 153rd birthday.  

Our communities have many events to offer this weekend! 

On Saturday, May 13, we will be at the Mennonite Heritage Village Museum (MHV) for their Manitoba 153rd Birthday Celebration. It is a free-admission event packed with many activities.

10 AM - Planting Pansies for Mom and children’s activities in the Auditorium  

Before the age of news websites and social media, Steinbach residents received their news through the Steinbach Post.  

The newspaper was owned by Jacob S. Friesen from around 1915 to 1967. A replica of his printery currently sits on Main St. of the Mennonite Heritage Village Museum (MHV.)   

Senior Curator Andrea Klassen explains the building is a miniature one-storey replica based on historical photographs of Friesen’s printery. 

Steinbach and area residents rallied last Saturday for the annual Pick Up and Walk event. It was the second year of the event since the two-year hiatus.  

Eldon Wollman, Steinbach's Head of Solid Waste, says the 1,143 volunteers collected 12.82 tonnes of garbage, a higher number than last year’s 12.52 tonnes. To him, it's "gratifying and humbling."   

The streets of Steinbach were dotted with bright yellow this weekend for the annual Pick Up and Walk event. 

Steinbach and area residents gathered at the T.G. Smith Centre for the second year of the event since the two-year hiatus. Volunteers collected garbage along ditches, city streets and parks. 

Organizers Martin Gunter and Mallory Dyck say the 20 churches and groups signed up brings the number to 1,143 volunteers cleaning up the city.  

Former Sabres students, staff, teachers and community members filled the Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS) on Thursday evening to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary.  

The open house was an opportunity for the community to witness how the school has changed in the past 50 years.  

The evening kicked off with a program featuring two special guest speakers. 

When spring break comes around, there is a destination Steinbach and area residents turn to year after year.  

Steinbach City Councillor Jac Siemens says the city is “extremely fortunate” to have the Steinbach Aquatic Centre. 

“It's been a busy place for many, many years on spring break. It's amazing how busy it is,” Siemens says.
