If you're looking to head up to northern Alberta for the long weekend you might not want to jump in the lake.

There have been blue-green algae advisories issued for lakes throughout the province but surprisingly there haven't been any issued for southern Alberta.

The presence of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can be harmful to human health, so advisories are issued when blooms are identified or confirmed by sample results.

A papal visit aimed at reconciliation with Canada's Indigenous people is currently underway in Edmonton.

Following a 10-hour, 20-minute journey from Rome, Pope Francis arrived at Edmonton International Airport late Sunday morning (July 24). An honour song was performed by a drum group from the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation as the Pope, 85, was wheeled into the airport hangar.

Francis was welcomed by the Governor General, Mary Simon, the Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, and other dignitaries from religious, political, and Indigenous backgrounds.

Officials from the province gathered at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village in Lamont County Monday (July 4) to announce more support for Ukrainian refugees. 

Among the attendees were Premier Jason Kenney, associate minister Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk, minister of children's services Matt Jones, and president of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress-Alberta Provincial Council, Orysia Boychuk.
