Conservatives choose Andrew Scheer as interim Opposition leader in Parliament

The Conservative caucus has tapped former leader Andrew Scheer to lead the party in the House of Commons when Parliament resumes on May 26 — a role that's needed because Pierre Poilievre lost his seat in last week's election.

"I'll be taking over the parliamentary leadership duties of the caucus until Mr. Poilievre rejoins us in the House," Scheer told reporters after emerging from an all-day caucus meeting on Parliament Hill Tuesday.

Regina’s Dr. Pamela Arnold elected president of Saskatchewan Medical Association

Dr. Pamela Arnold of Regina has been elected president of the Saskatchewan Medical Association (SMA), becoming the organization’s 59th president.

Arnold was chosen by physician delegates during the SMA’s 2025 Spring Representative Assembly, held Friday at Saskatoon’s Sheraton Cavalier. She succeeds Dr. Andre Grobler of Prince Albert and will serve a one-year term.

Saskatchewan NDP to introduce anti-separation bill that aims to amend rules

Saskatchewan's Opposition NDP is planning to introduce legislation that aims to amend referendum and plebiscite rules, a move it says will hold Premier Scott Moe's feet to the fire on talk of separation. 

NDP Leader Carla Beck's private member's bill contains the words "Keep Saskatchewan in Canada" in its title. 

The Opposition was unable to provide details on the legislation as it has not been put before the legislative assembly. 

A notice of motion from the legislature says Beck plans to introduce the bill tomorrow. 

Fire calls, fender benders, and more in latest Biggar RCMP report

Biggar RCMP had a wide variety of calls inside their first report of May 2025. Police joined fire crews for a few calls, dealt with a collision involving a parked car, and carried out an arrest looking at the list for May 5. 

Grass fires and other unwanted blazes are a main topic with the spring now here. Biggar RCMP members joined a response by the volunteer fire department after a fence was reported on fire in Biggar, at a property on the 100 block of 5 Avenue West.

Remembering the local men who liberated the Netherlands

The Swift Current Legion Branch 56 honoured the heroes who helped liberate the Netherlands 80 years ago on Saturday.

Memorial Park was host to a parade of Legion members, dignitaries, and local members who laid wreaths at the Cenotaph. They were gathered to recognize the sacrifice local military members, and those across Canada, made to ensure the freedom of the Dutch people.

Klippers deadline acquisition Bueckert commits to Red Deer

Mason Bueckert helped bolster the Kindersley Jr. Klippers roster this past season as a trade deadline acquisition, and now the 4-year SJHL player is moving on to the college level as the Klippers announced Bueckert's commitment to Red Deer Polytechnic of the ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference).

The Kings hockey program welcomed Bueckert with a post to social media. They called the Saskatoon native a playmaker with grit, after Bueckert had 121 points in 146 career SJHL regular season games, scoring 12 points in 26 points with the Klippers after being acquired.

UPDATE: Phone lines back up and running for RCMP detachments

Phone lines were not working for RCMP detachments across the province on Tuesday morning. 

The situation was rectified by just before noon on Tuesday morning, as at 11:43 Saskatchewan RCMP Media sent out a release sharing that their phone services were once again fully functional.
