Trump tells Congress tariffs benefit U.S. as commerce secretary floats idea of deal

A day into Donald Trump's North American trade war, the U.S. president remained adamant that tariffs would benefit America even as a key member of his team has floated that a compromise could materialize Wednesday.

Trump addressed a joint session of Congress Tuesday night, for the first time since he returned to office in January, by making a case for his massive tariff agenda. 

"We have been ripped off for decades by nearly every country on Earth and we will not let that happen any longer," Trump told lawmakers in Washington.

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to escalate the trade war he launched with Canada even further Tuesday, just hours after imposing his first round of punishing import taxes on all Canadian goods.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Trump's imposition of a 10 per cent tariff on Canadian energy and 25 per cent tariffs on all other Canadian goods "dumb" and said Canada is fighting back.

ECS takes Pink Tournament title and raises $7,000 for cancer fight

The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) senior girls basketball team won the 14th Annual Victor Elias Memorial "Shoot For A Cure" Pink Senior Girls Basketball Tournament for the first time since 2017, defeating Moose Jaw Peacock 62-56 in the final.

ECS led by 20 points at halftime, but Moose Jaw battled back in the second half, making for an exciting finish. The last time ECS won its home tournament, they also faced Peacock in the final.

Saskatchewan premier Moe faces calls to hit back as punishing U.S. tariffs kick in

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is facing calls from within his province and from a fellow premier to hit back on punishing U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford told reporters Tuesday Moe should consider no longer selling potash, uranium and oil to the United States and instead find different markets. 

"I consider Scott Moe a good friend of mine ... and I've talked to him. We need to make sure America feels the pain," Ford said.

Southeast re-embracing freeze with temporary chill and flurries over the area

While warm weather has been the climate for the past week, we're seeing a bit of a dip into more winter-like conditions over the next few days.

That began with some overnight snow which blanketed the southeast, while not dropping any significant amounts over the areas.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Danielle Desjardins says from what they saw that was triggered by a chill that rushed through the area.

The Estevan Kinettes delivered on a fundraiser last night that saw a number of community members get pied in the face.

The Kinettes had been accepting votes to determine who would be pied, with votes cast in exchange for donated money.

Potential pie recipients included Mayor Tony Sernick, ECS principal James Jones, lifetime Kinsman Dave Elliott, and two Kinette ladies, Raelene Fieber and Susan Colbow.
