Who will end the debate? Political gridlock continues in the House of Commons

Federal political parties appear to be locked in a game of chicken in an increasingly precarious Parliament over a debate that has stalled almost all business in the House of Commons.

The Conservatives have vowed the debate will continue until the Liberals hand over unredacted documents to the RCMP about a green-tech foundation that was found to have misspent government money.

The debate has now stretched into its second week.

Estevan-Big Muddy Saskatchewan NDP candidate looking for affordability, healthcare from provincial government

The race for the Estevan-Big Muddy riding is seeing candidates announce themselves for the election race coming soon, with the Saskatchewan NDP bringing in their candidate.

Phil Smith, who was born in Arcola and grew up in Carlyle, currently works as a cook in the food services industry. He was announced as the candidate back in September as the Saskatchewan NDP were preparing for the writ to drop.

Federal ministers were told of increasing 'volume and complexity' of foreign threats

A newly released document shows federal cabinet ministers were warned in May 2022 that hostile states were targeting Canada's strategic interests, the integrity of Canadian institutions and democratic processes, and the ability of the public to exercise Charter-protected rights and freedoms.

The document is a summary of one of four memorandums to cabinet, generally considered closely held confidences, that were provided to a federal commission of inquiry into foreign interference as part of its terms of reference. 

Ottawa invests more money in organic research

The Federal government has announced over $6.8 million over five years for the Organic Science Cluster is geared to research and advancing sustainable practices. 

Allison Squires is president of the Canadian Organic Growers says the organic sector is unique in that it encompasses everything from aquaculture to cranberries to horticulture and field crops.

She says this pot of money will go towards projects in all these different areas, out of the 14 projects two are based in the prairies.

EPS details week of calls with break-and-enters, thefts, and more

The Estevan Police Service has released a series of updates on police work in the area over the past week in Estevan.

EPS was at the scene of a disturbance at a residence on the south side of the city. Members spoke to the people involved and defused the situation, with the Police and Crisis Team engaging individuals with support services.

Election workers needed as polls opening soon for the province

Provincial elections are getting closer for Saskatchewan with those set to take place close to the end of the month.

The work of a provincial election takes a lot of people, with workers going to municipalities all over the province to make sure votes are counted properly.

This year the Estevan area is seeing a stronger need for those workers, with Elections Saskatchewan Spokesperson Tim Kydd explaining where the gaps are.

Walliser looking to connect community if elected again as councillor

The Estevan municipal election is gearing up with the final call for nominees later this month, with some of them getting out in the community.

Kirsten Walliser is running for city council again after having worked through the previous four years. She was born and raised in Estevan and currently works as a Registered Nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Walliser says that this time she wants to run to continue helping out the city in a positive way.

Elecs fall to Moose Jaw Peacocks 48-30, quarterback out with a broken collarbone

The ECS Elecs Football Team were up against the wind and the Moose Jaw Peacocks over the weekend, coming back home with a 48-30 loss. 

Head coach Chris Bayerle said they had a game plan walking into the windy field, but what hindered their play was their run game being shut down by their opponent. This kept them pinned down on their own end zone and kicking against the wind. 

Adjustments with their defense seemed to have helped, but Moose Jaw kept the Elecs honest and made a few great plays, says Bayerle. However, an injury would set them back in the third quarter.
