SETH, Southeast College and U of R partner to boost energy innovation in southeast Sask.

A new partnership aimed at advancing energy innovation and economic diversification in southeast Saskatchewan was officially launched Wednesday at the Critical Resources, Innovation and Technology Conference in Estevan.

The memorandum of understanding (MOU), signed between Southeast Techhub (SETH), Southeast College and the University of Regina, establishes the Innovation Centre for Energy Development (ICED). The initiative will focus on applied research, workforce development, and support for startups in Estevan, Coronach and surrounding communities.

Saskatchewan Government hiring new police officers with two new positions in Estevan

The Government of Saskatchewan has announced that it's putting forward funding for the positions of 21 new police officers, which have been filled over the past year.

"Saskatchewan residents expect and deserve to feel safe in their communities, and that means having enough police officers on the ground where they are needed the most," said Corrections, Policing and Public Safety Minister Tim McLeod. "We are proud to support municipal police services in expanding their frontline capacity to prevent and respond to criminal activity in their communities." 

Rain and snow system drops up to 32 centimeters of snow in the southeast

The southeast saw a good bit of precipitation come down yesterday as a system blasted overhead with both snow and rain coming down. For some areas of the southeast, like Estevan, they mostly felt the rain. However, areas further north got buried in what felt like winter-like conditions.

Assaults up in March, but overall crime down year to date: police data

Estevan Police Service Chief Jamie Blunden presented the city’s March 2025 crime statistics at the latest Board of Police Commissioners meeting, highlighting a rise in assaults but an overall decline in year-to-date crimes and improved property crime numbers compared to last March.

“When we look at March of this year’s crimes against persons, we’re up compared to last year — from 12 total violations in March 2024 to 20 this March,” said Blunden. “The biggest driver of that increase is assaults. This March, we had 16 assault files.”

CUPE health-care workers rally for contract after two years of stalled talks

After more than two years of negotiations, health-care workers represented by CUPE are taking their frustrations to the steps of the Saskatchewan Legislative Building.

Arlene Picard, general vice-president of CUPE’s Region Fuller, said the union is bargaining for a new collective agreement that prioritizes better wages, improved work-life balance, and stronger recruitment and retention strategies amid ongoing health-care staffing shortages.

Agricultural Water Management Fund application deadline coming up April 30

The 2025 Agricultural Water Management Fund is now accepting applications. This fund aims to support agricultural producers and local governments in developing effective water management projects.

Building construction in Saskatchewan rises to best in country in latest data

The government of Saskatchewan says it's seeing more success with building construction investment, which is being backed up by numbers from Statistics Canada. In their latest release, they showed that Saskatchewan saw a 29.9 per cent growth in February 2025 compared to February 2024 for building construction investment.

Investment in building construction is calculated based on the total spending value on building construction within the province. 

The figures would put Saskatchewan in first place among all provinces for year-over-year growth.

12,000 votes cast in Souris-Moose Mountain riding during advance polls

Voters in southeast Saskatchewan have been busy over the last few days as advanced polling swept through the country, opening up polls ahead of election day. With polls open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Friday to Monday, voters had 48 hours to get out and make a choice early.

Elections Canada's returning officer for the Souris-Moose Mountain area, Margaret Tuchscherer, says that the unofficial count for the four days sits at 12,528 votes cast at stations.

New pool part of Midale’s plan to support rising population

Houses in Midale aren’t staying on the market for long — a trend that’s caught the attention of town officials.

“Properties are moving pretty quickly,” said Chief Administrative Officer Dena Scott. While she’s not exactly sure what’s driving the demand, she suspects affordability plays a role. “The cost of the houses, that type of thing, isn’t as high as it is in the cities,” she said, noting that even with a commute, Midale’s lower cost of living could be a major draw.
