Perseids meteor shower peaked early this morning

Scott Young is Planetarium Astronomer at Manitoba Museum, and he says last night and early Tuesday morning was the peak time for the Perseids meteor shower. 

Young explains meteors are commonly referred to as shooting stars or falling stars. These streaks of light in the sky are caused by little pieces of dust, sand, or rock in outer space, which burn up in our atmosphere. 

'Return to the farm' with Hollande Bezan's Gallery in the Park exhibit

The second season is underway at Altona's Gallery in the Park, with Winnipeg based painter Hollande Bezan's exhibition Return to the farm installed on the main floor of the Schwartz House.

The works honour her family’s agricultural roots which are anchored just north of Inglis. The paintings explore over a century of connection to the land, honouring the Bezan family and its enduring farming legacy through five generations.

Travel doc info included in WestJet cyberattack, but not credit and debit cards

WestJet says some personal data, including information about travel documents such as passports, was stolen in a cyberattack earlier this year, but credit and debit card numbers as well as user passwords were not compromised.

In a note to customers, WestJet says the personal information taken varies from person to person but may include name, date of birth, e‑mail address, mailing address, phone number, gender and recent travel booking history, including travel booking numbers.

Funeral For:  Kenton Schellenberg 
Funeral Date: September 5, 2025 
Kenton Schellenberg, 69, of Steinbach passed away Saturday, August 9th at Bethesda Regional Health Centre. He is survived by 1 sister, 2 brothers, and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Erdman and Romelda Schellenberg.  
The funeral service for Kenton Schellenberg will be held September 5th, 1:30pm at Steinbach EMC with burial at Heritage Cemetery.

Three candidates on ballot for Manitoba byelection

Three candidates are vying for a seat in Manitoba's legislature in the upcoming byelection in the Spruce Woods constituency. 

Elections Manitoba says Ray Berthelette is running for the governing NDP, Stephen Reid is carrying the Liberal banner and Colleen Robbins is hoping to keep the seat blue for the Progressive Conservatives.

Berthelette is a former real estate agent who recently worked as an executive assistant to cabinet minister Glen Simard.

Reid is a teacher and Robbins is a longtime Tory volunteer. 

Federal Liberals looking to provide 'certainty' to investors in fall budget

Major institutional investors are asking the federal government to give them a reason to invest more at home in the upcoming fall budget, says the Liberal MPs leading budget consultations across Canada.

The federal Liberals are in the midst of consultations on the upcoming 2025 budget. While federal budgets typically are tabled in the spring, this one is set to land during the fall session of Parliament.

Art with Heart: Samaritan House staff and volunteers create meaningful mural together

Samaritan House Ministries is unveiling a new mural at their downtown Brandon location on Pacific Avenue.  The outdoor wall painting will be on the side where their entrance to their Safe and Warm shelter welcomes folks into that part of the building.

The Safe & Warm Shelter provides 41 beds, with 25 of those being funded by the Province of Manitoba.  The remaining 16 beds if funded by Samaritan House Ministries through their financial supporters.

Over 600 plant categories to grace Miami’s 135-year-old horticulture show

Since 1890 — for 135 years — the Miami Horticulture Show has acted as a hub for plant lovers to come together to view the finest a rural Manitoba harvest can offer.  

Miami Horticultural Club President Lynn Sprott said the first iteration of the show was held by a local resident referred to as “Mrs. Campbell.”
