Here’s how to keep your pet cool during the heat wave

With the hot temperatures in areas of Southern Alberta this week, a local animal shelter is offering tips on how to help your pet beat the summer heat.  

Heaven Can Wait Animal Rescue Foundation took to social media encouraging pet owners to shift walking and outdoor times to cooler hours of the day, as pavement and asphalt can become hot and burn paws.   

Causeway access limited for Canada Day fireworks celebrations

Portage la Prairie is gearing up for its annual Canada Day celebrations, with a fireworks display planned for the southwest bank of the causeway this year.

The city has announced that fireworks will be primarily fired westward, with some shells launched to the east.

Residents and visitors can expect the causeway to remain open for vehicle and foot traffic until 9 p.m. on July 1, when it will close for the event.

The fireworks are scheduled to begin at dusk, approximately 10:30 p.m.

RCMP investigating deadly head-on crash in RM of Hanover

One man is dead and another is recovering following a head-on collision Sunday night.

Around midnight, Steinbach RCMP responded to the crash on highway 12, about 1 km south of highway 303, in the Rural Municipality of Hanover.

Officers say when they arrived at the scene, one vehicle was on its side in the ditch while another blocked both lanes of the highway.

Missing Cochrane woman found safe

Cochrane RCMP say 41-year-old Laura-Lee Steinhauser has been located and is safe.

She was reported missing after last being seen on June 28, 2025, in Cochrane.

Police issued a public request for help earlier today, citing concern for her well-being.

RCMP are thanking the public and media for their assistance in sharing the information.

Two dead after tragic crash near St. Labre

A woman and young girl are dead following a tragic crash near St. Labre.

On Friday, before 1 p.m., Sprague RCMP were called to a two-vehicle collision on St. Labre Road.

According to an initial investigation, police say a truck was travelling southbound when a northbound minivan entered the southbound lane after a curve in the road.

The vehicles collided, and officer say the minivan ended up on its side in a small creek.

Goldfinch Raw Water Supply Project continues

Construction will be taking place in Wheatland County right after Canada Day.

Construction crews will be working along Range Road 253B starting on Wednesday (July 2). The work is part of the ongoing construction of the Goldfinch Raw Water Supply Project. 

Crews will be installing a water pipeline throughout July, with completion expected on July 31. 

Access to the road will be restricted; however, foot traffic will be allowed down to the Bow River. 

Wheatland County is advising residents and drivers to follow posted signage.
