'A Blast': Schenher reflects on stellar performance at national championships

Team Saskatchewan finished 5th at the National U18 Women’s Football Championships in Fredericton, New Brunswick last week. One of the standout athletes on the team was Weyburn’s own Ella Schenher, who over the course of one game and one quarter of action, amassed 435 yards rushing, while also handling quarterback and punting duties, and also taking some snaps on the defensive side of the ball.  

Local youth shine in summer theatre program at Crocus 80

Crocus 80 is hosting its yearly Summer Youth Theatre Program, and this year's production is expected to be the biggest yet.

According to Brittany Nightingale, the current secretary for Crocus80 and program facilitator, the turnout has been exceptional.

"We had 35 students register at the beginning," Nightingale reveals. "This is the largest group we've had, and it's incredibly exciting."

Hillstead, Marlene Joyce

Marlene Joyce Hillstead, late of Weyburn, SK passed away on July 22, 2024 at the age of 85 years.

A Service of Remembrance will be held on Friday, August 16, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. from RD Family Funeral Chapel, Weyburn, SK with Nancy Styles officiating.  Luncheon will follow at the Knox Fellowship Hall, 136 ~ 2nd Street NE, Weyburn, SK. Interment will be held at Green Acres Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Weyburn, SK.  Urn Bearer is Ryan Hillstead and all those in attendance are considered honorary pallbearers.

UPDATED: Red Wings set the stage for an exciting season at AGM

The annual meeting for the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings was held at the Ramada in Weyburn Wednesday night. 

Those in attendance heard about how the past season went for the Red Wings, on and off the ice. The team had a short, but memorable playoff run, going to seven games against the Humboldt Broncos in one of the most entertaining matchups of the postseason last year.

The grand opening of the pickleball courts in Weyburn was held last night, at the new facilities located behind the Credit Union Spark Centre. Built this summer, the new courts were made possible thanks to a partnership between the City of Weyburn, and the newly formed Pickleball Weyburn.  

What's up with all the dragonflies? Provincial Entomologist shares on the 'voracious predators'

The congregations or 'swarms' of Blue Darner dragonflies being observed over the past couple of weeks in the Weyburn area are the result of having an ample supply of food - smaller flying insects. 

This is according to Dr. James Tansey, the Provincial Entomologist with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture. 

Dragonflies, and their smaller, close relatives, damselflies, consume smaller flying insects that can bug anyone trying to enjoy the great outdoors, such as biting midges (also known as no-see-ums) and even mosquitoes.

While the Weyburn Humane Society is still at capacity for cats, they won't turn away a stray or feral cat in need of help. They also want to ensure families are reunited with their pets, which is why they encourage those irritated by stray cats not to take matters into their own hands.
