Edward H. Henheffer, late of Weyburn, SK passed away on May 16, 2025 at the age of 75 years.

He was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Eunice Henheffer; sister-in-law, Rebecca Friesen; niece, Lorilie Henheffer; brother, Douglas J. Henheffer; and several uncles, aunts and cousins.

With producer and policy interest in regenerative agriculture growing across Canada, policymakers and industry leaders are debating how to standardize the concept without undermining its core principles or grassroots appeal.

Questions around standardization and regulation were front and centre during an April 30 webinar hosted by the Canadian Agri-Food Policy Institute.

Seeding progress well above average in Alberta

Alberta's latest crop report shows seeding of major crops is significantly ahead of historical averages. Manglai, product coordinator with Alberta Financial Services Corporation, who helps compile the report, says seeding is now at 47 per cent, well above the five-year average of 26 per cent and the ten-year average of 29 per cent.

Breaking down the regional analysis, the South region leads with 76 per cent of seeding completed, followed by the Central region at 51 per cent  the Northeast at 37 per cent, the Northwest at 29 per cent, and the Peace region at 27 per cent.

New funding for veterinary care services for Northern and remote communities

The Manitoba government has announced a $1 million partnership to enhance veterinary care services in northern and remote communities, which will include mobile spay and neuter services. Agriculture Minister Ron Kostitsyn emphasized that this funding is a step in the right direction to ensure every animal receives timely and compassionate care.

WCS 'Shrek' Junior Musical hits the stage today

Performances begin tonight for the Weyburn Comprehensive School's Junior Musical, 'Shrek', featuring Grade 7, 8, and 9 students.

Band Teacher and Musical Director Brayden Jensen said they'll perform it first at 1:30 this afternoon and at 7 p.m., with two more performances tomorrow and Thursday at 7.

The musical follows the storyline pretty closely to the Shrek movie, other than the music. 

"The music in the musical is quite different, but we do get to end off the show with the song, 'Believer', which is everyone's favorite from the movie."

RCMP investigating break-ins in communities along Highway 33

The Weyburn and Fillmore RCMP are asking for the public’s help as they investigate a series of crimes reported between May 15th and May 17th in the towns of Fillmore and Francis. 

According to police, multiple incidents of vehicle mischief and garage break-ins were reported over the three-day period. Investigators have confirmed that several thefts occurred from both the vehicles and garages involved. 

Weyburn's Quinn Mantei off to NCAA ranks for next season

After four seasons with the Brandon Wheat Kings, Weyburn’s Quinn Mantei is taking the next step in his hockey career. The defenceman, who captained the Wheat Kings this past season, has committed to play hockey at the collegiate level. He will be going to Providence College, joining the Friars for the upcoming NCAA season. 

With majority of crops in the ground, farmers appreciate heavy rainfall in the southeast

Over the past few weeks of seeding season, farmers have been keeping an eye on the sky as they were hoping it would stay clear, giving them time to get the majority of seeding done. An early rain could push back seeding for too many crops, but with no rain, they would miss out on a crucial boost for crop growth.

For better or worse, a large amount of rain came down on the southeast last week, giving farmers all the moisture they asked for and more.

Statistics Canada's April inflation data to show impact of carbon price removal

Statistics Canada is set to release inflation data for April today.

Market data shows economists on average expect the annual rate of inflation cooled to 1.6 per cent last month, from 2.3 per cent in March.

The Liberal government eliminated the consumer carbon price at the start of April, offering motorists some relief at the pump.

Last month also marked the first full month of tariffs between Canada and the United States, though both sides have offered some exemptions in the trade dispute.

High-ranking officials from the world's top economies are in Banff, Alta., this week for a three-day summit that will cover topics including the global economy, the war in Ukraine and artificial intelligence.

The meeting comes during a period of heightened instability as U.S. President Donald Trump continues his tariff-driven effort to bring industry to American soil, leading many countries to reconsider their trade relationships with the United States and other trading partners.
