Morinville girl raises money for domestic abuse charity

With June 17 being Lemonade Day, there were tons of stands set up in the area to teach youth about owning and operating businesses.

One of these stands, made by 10-year-old Ivy Liss in Morinville, helped raise funds for the Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation.

"My great uncle made me a lemonade stand," said Liss. "and I was like, 'Wait, isn't there a thing called Lemonade Day?'"

Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for area

A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for the region. 

Environment Canada says that thunderstorms could roll through north-central Alberta this afternoon which includes Edmonton, Sherwood Park, Redwater, Fort Saskatchewan, and St. Albert. 

"Many of these thunderstorms will be slow-moving, and a few of them may become severe producing heavy rainfall and nickel-size hail," said Environment Canada in a release. 

Keep in mind that hail can cause property damage and that excessive rain could cause unsafe driving conditions. 

Gibbons postmaster retires after 23 years

A Gibbons postmaster has retired after 23 years on the job. 

Louise Latawiec, 64, was hired at the Gibbons Canada Post Office as a clerk on October 1, 2000. 

"On a whim, I applied because someone said there might be an opening here," said Latawiec. "The postmaster at that time called me in to have a talk, she showed me where everything was and said, 'can you come in tomorrow?'." 

"The ladies here knew me and when I dropped off my resume they told [the postmaster] that they knew me and that I would be a good worker, so I owe a lot to those ladies." 

RCMP: Truck rammed vehicles on Lamont County highway

Vegreville RCMP is investigating multiple complaints regarding a truck driving dangerously near Lamont County. 

On Saturday (June 17) police received reports of a Ford F-250 flat-deck truck driving erratically and ramming into vehicles while driving westbound on Highway 16. 

More instances involving this truck were reported near Vegreville and even entered Lamont County along Highway 834 and Highway 29. 

Foreign firefighters fight flames, fatigue and get 'eaten alive' by mosquitoes

Eighteen-year-old Hunter Sousa from Maine celebrated his high school graduation by hopping in a truck and heading to Nova Scotia to fight the biggest forest fire in the province's history.

Sousa works for the Maine forest service as an on-call firefighter, but had never before fought a fire. The call from his superior came on a Thursday.

Leguee Farms is now managed by the third generation ...  the brother and sister duo of Jake and Sarah and their brother-in-law Erik Nikolejsin.

The trio manage the farm as a team and intensely manage their crops finding new ways to look after their soils and their margins.

CGC is raising concerns about Ottawa' proposed pesticide measures.

The Canada Grains Council President Erin Gowriluk says decisions need to be firmly rooted in scientific evidence.

"By prioritizing evidence-based approaches, we can enhance environmental stewardship and maintain a strong relationship between scientists and policymakers."

She says while they commend the Federal Agriculture Ministers recognition of the importance of pesticides to food production and security they see two critical areas of concern.

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP arrest driver going 100 km/h over the speed limit

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP has arrested an Edmonton man for driving over 100 km/h above the speed limit.

Earlier this month, police observed a vehicle travelling at 206 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on Highway 15 near Highway 28A. The officer was able to pull over and arrest the driver.

The driver, 23-year-old Jose Sebastian, has been charged with dangerous driving and speeding.

Sebastian has been released from custody with a court date set for July 13 at the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort Saskatchewan

The McIntyre Ranch is one of the largest private prairie grassland conservation projects in Canadian history

The McIntyre Ranch located south of Lethbridge is 130 years old and is one of the largest private landholdings in Canada.

The 22,000-hectare property is home to more than 150 species of plants and animals.

Grasslands are one of the most threatened and least protected ecosystems worldwide. 

This week is Native Prairie Appreciation Week, stats show that over 80 per cent of native prairies in Canada and around the world have been lost.

This is National Pollinator Week

Here in Canada the vast majority of honey bee colonies (about 67 percent) are located in the prairies where 80 percent of the country's honey is produced.

Dr  Stephen Pernal, the National Lead for Apiculture Research program at AAFC's Honeybee research centre at Beaver Lodge (Alberta) says bees play an important role in agriculture.
