Seniors and youth connect over arts and crafts

What better way to break the generational divide than with arts, crafts, and good conversation?

Children and seniors gathered in the dining room of Southfort Bend Gardens on Wednesday (Sept. 27) as part of the Seniors and Youth Networking Community (SYNC).

SYNC was created by Carole Bossert, a local teacher, nine years ago while she was teaching at James Mowat Elementary. Now she's a fifth-grade teacher at SouthPointe School.

Strathcona County looking for info on weekend grass fire

Strathcona County Emergency Services (SCES) is looking for more information regarding the cause of a grass fire over the weekend. 

At about 2:30 p.m. on Sunday (Sept. 25) fire crews received reports of multiple fires burning in a ditch located on Highway 16 between Range Road 222 and 225. 

Emergency services responded with seven vehicles and found that the fire had spread along the eastbound lane thanks to dry conditions and strong winds. The highway was reduced to one lane while crews worked to extinguish the blaze. 

Hurricane Ian nears Florida landfall with 155 mph winds

Hurricane Ian rapidly intensified as it neared landfall along Florida's southwest coast Wednesday morning, gaining top winds of 155 mph (250 kph), just shy of the most dangerous Category 5 status. Damaging winds and rain lashed the state, and the heavily populated Naples to Sarasota region was at highest risk of a devastating storm surge.

Hurricane Ian gets nasty quickly, turbocharged by warm water

Hurricane Ian is quickly gaining monstrous strength as it moves over oceans partly heated up by climate change, just like 30 other Atlantic tropical storms since 2017 that became much more powerful in less than a day.

This turbocharging of storms is likely to become even more frequent as the world gets warmer, scientists say.

City Wide Food Drive pulls in over 15,000 pounds of donations

The Fort Saskatchewan Food Bank (FSFB) took over 15,000 pounds of donations.

Last week, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organized the City Wide Food Drive, where yellow bags were left outside residences. These bags were filled with non-perishables and picked up by volunteers on Saturday (Sept. 24). 

The food drive was a great success, with 15,168 pounds of donations counted so far.

A whopping 18,000 pounds of food was donated during 2021's food drive.

More cases of Avian Influenza showing up on the Prairies

The migration of wild birds this fall has resulted in a return of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza or "bird flu" showing up across the prairies.

Producers are encouraged to take active measures by preventing contact between poultry and wild birds, limiting visitors to barns, using barn-specific clothing and footwear, and regularly monitoring birds for signs of illness.

The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza has had a major impact on the poultry industry with an estimated 1.2 million birds in commercial poultry operations in Alberta being infected.

Update: Fort Saskatchewan RCMP looking for missing teen

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP have found a 17-year-old boy. 

Police say Rowin McIntyre was last seen Monday (Sept. 26) in Fort Saskatchewan. There was general concern for McIntyre's wellbeing. 

Police issued an update on Thursday morning saying that he has been found safe and sound.

This was the second time McIntyre had gone missing this month. 

Indigenous society looking to bridge gaps in Fort Sask

The newly formed Indigenous Society of Fort Saskatchewan is eager to make a difference in the community. 

The group, formed in July by Colleen Dollfusz and Tammie Pawlik, is the first of its kind in Fort Saskatchewan. It came about out of a desire to help people through difficult times. 

“I’m an ally of indigenous people so for me, I come at it from a different perspective,” said Pawlik. “When I hear about people going through hard times and being oppressed it gets my attention.”
