Morinville charity run back after two year hiatus

Registration is now open for the Break Free 5/10K Run and Walk, hosted by The Jessica Martel Memorial Foundation (JMMF).

The JMMF holds the charity run every year as an opportunity to engage with the community and educate the public about domestic violence and abuse. The last run was in 2019 before going on hiatus due to COVID-19. 

Defense concludes case in Damien Starrett murder trial

The defence has wrapped up its case in a Fort Saskatchewan murder trial.

Damien Starrett is accused of killing his one-year-old son Ares and assaulting his five-year-old daughter back in 2019. He is currently facing second-degree murder charges.

He claims he was asleep when he attacked his children. As such, the defence is pursuing a 'not criminally responsible' action which could result in Starrett being sent to a psychiatric hospital instead of being criminally convicted.

Fort Saskatchewan dancer talks Canada's Got Talent audition

A St. André Bessette student impressed the nation on Canada's Got Talent.

Dayton Paradis is a 16-year-old dancer from Fort Saskatchewan. He said when he was a kid growing up in Saskatoon, he tried a bunch of different sports like soccer and karate, but none of them really fit him. 

"Then my parents finally put me in a dance class in Saskatoon. I took one hour of hip hop a week, and I fell in love with it."

Chocolate recall linked to salmonella outbreak in Europe now expanded to Canada

A recall of certain Kinder brand chocolate products linked to an outbreak of salmonella in Europe and the U.K. has been expanded to Canada.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency says there have been no illnesses reported in Canada in association with the affected products distributed by Ferrero Canada Ltd.

The recalled chocolates include Kinder Schoko-Bons, Happy Moments - Kinder Confections Assortment, Kinder Mini Eggs, Kinder Egg Hunt Kits, Kinder Mix 7 Easter Treats, Kinder Surprise Miraculous, Kinder Surprise Natoons and Kinder Surprise.

It's been nearly seven months since Danielle Power and Andrea Brousseau of Confetti Sweets made their television debut, and business is booming.

The pair and Marilou Honrado of Cloud Cakes in Edmonton appeared on an episode of The Big Bake, a competitive baking series on Food Network Canada in late September. As the name implies, a cake's minimum height must be four and a half feet tall.

More than half of all fatal collisions involving speed are in rural areas, police say

The RCMP have a warning for drivers this spring. 

As the weather gets warmer and roads clear, police remind the public of the importance of maintaining safe speeds. Last year, there were 70,580 speeding-related offences within the Alberta RCMP’s jurisdiction. In April 2021 alone, police issued 5,220 speeding tickets to Alberta drivers. 

Rural Municipalities of Alberta give their stance on a provincial police force

The Rural Municipalities of Alberta (RMA) is not on board with a provincial police force.

They have submitted a report to the province opposing the creation of the Alberta Provincial Police Service (APPS). The government is looking into the possibility based on a recommendation made by the Fair Deal Panel.

Redwater appoints new CAO

The Town of Redwater has appointed a new CAO.

Ken Van Buul has more than 30 years of experience in public service. He grew up in Slave Lake, where he began his career in public service.

He's moved around to many different communities and held various roles, including manager of recreation services in Spruce Grove, general manager for Parkland County and CAO in Lac La Biche.

His first day as Redwater CAO was Mar. 28.
