Fort Saskatchewan father accused of murder takes the stand

The 33-year-old from Fort Saskatchewan is facing a second-degree murder charge after allegedly killing one-year-old Ares and assaulting his five-year-old daughter in 2019. 

Sherwood Park Dairy Queen raises $1-million for Stollery

A Sherwood Park business has hit a huge charity milestone.

The Sherwood Park Baseline Dairy Queen store has held a Miracle Treat Day every year, where 100 per cent of the money sold from Blizzards is donated to the Stollery Children's Hospital. They've also brainstormed a number of different events to raise money over the years, like garage sales or other donation days for certain items.

This year, the store hit the $1-million donation milestone. This year also happens to be this Dairy Queen's 25th year in Sherwood Park.

AJFHL All-Star Game and Skills Challenge to be hosted in Fort Sask this year

The Alberta Junior Female Hockey League is preparing for an all-star weekend of hockey. 

On Saturday (Apr.2), players from across Alberta will put their skills to the test during the All-Star Game and Skills Challenge at the JRC. The event usually takes place in Penhold; however, Fort Saskatchewan put up a hand to host the games for 2022. 

Federal Liberals set to deliver budget on April 7, Freeland tells House of Commons

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland plans to deliver this year's federal budget next week.

Freeland told the House of Commons she will unveil the government's spending plans on April 7 in a document that has been expected to focus on measures to spur economic growth.

It is also anticipated the budget will have new social programs promised as part of an agreement to earn the backing of the New Democrats in key parliamentary votes.

That includes the first steps on national pharmacare and dental care.

Strathcona County looking to show off local artistic talent

The county is seeking local artists and those with a "significant connection" to Strathcona County to submit their work as part of its Annual Art Acquisition Program and Salon Exhibition. 

Submissions will be displayed at the Salon exhibition at Gallery@501 from May 14 until June 14. A jury of artists and county residents will recommend pieces to become a part of its permanent art collection from this exhibit.  

Artwork selected for the permanent art collection will be announced during a celebration event on June 16. 

Oil and gas sector emissions need to be cut two-fifths by 2030, new climate plan says

A new climate plan for Canada projects the oil and gas industry will need to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by 42 per cent from current levels by 2030 if the country is to meet its new targets.

The emissions reduction plan tabled in the House of Commons today by Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault forecasts that electricity emissions will be almost zero by the end of the decade but it will take longer to see real progress from the transportation sector.

The plan is a legislated requirement under the net-zero emissions law the government passed last year.

Near zero visibility on area highways

A fog advisory has been issued for the capital region.

Some spots on the highways are reporting near-zero visibility Tuesday morning (Mar.29). It's recommended that drivers turn on their lights and maintain a safe following distance.

Titan Towing also advises people to use the white line painted on the right side of the road as a guide, have their defrost on, and set wipers to a low setting to keep the windshield clear.

Conditions should improve later in the morning.

Kenney interviewed by RCMP in criminal probe tied to party leadership race

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney says he has been interviewed by RCMP as part of an investigation into potential criminal identity fraud in the 2017 United Conservative Party leadership contest.

“I did an interview at (their) request, once,” Kenney said Monday after being asked by reporters.

“As I’ve said from the very beginning ... we’d always be happy to answer questions. At the end of the day, my campaign did everything it could to carefully follow all of the rules, and I’m confident we did so.”

Morinville one of five communities in Alberta to receive LAV III monument

Morinville’s newest monument got a little bit of help from the provincial government. 

The Rotary Club of Morinville received $125,000 from the province through the Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) to support the LAV III (Light Armoured Vehicle) Monument Program. 

Run through Canada Company, the program recognizes the service and sacrifice of the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan by providing LAV IIIs to qualifying communities throughout Canada. Morinville is one of five Alberta communities to be selected.
