Location of new Fort Saskatchewan roundabout revealed

The City of Fort Saskatchewan has revealed more information about a new roundabout coming to the community. 

The project was announced back in March, but the exact location was not disclosed. 

On Tuesday (May 9) that changed, as the city confirmed that the roundabout will be located on Westpark Drive and Woodbridge Link. 

Construction is expected to get underway this year, but a timeline for the completion of the project has not been confirmed. 

Edmonton Fire provides update on hazmat incident

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) has provided an update on the hazmat situation just west of Sherwood Park. 

On Monday, (May 8) crews were called to 37 Street and 101 Avenue after reports of smoke coming from the Building Products of Canada Corporation plant. 

Upon arrival, they found steam in a tank being vented and then cleared the scene. 

On Tuesday morning, EFRS crews were then called back to the same location after reports of odd-coloured smoke coming from one of the tanks. 

Bill C-234 is now before the Senate

Key bills for the Agriculture sector are moving forward. 

Bill C-234 is a key bill that farmers and ranchers are anxious to see move forward with farm groups calling on the Senate to pass it quickly.

The bill would exempt the carbon tax producers pay on propane and natural gas for on-farm heating of barns and grain dryers.

Senator Rob Black is a Senator for Ontario, Chair of the Canadian Senators Group and Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry.

4-H Beef Club celebrating 80 years in Fort Saskatchewan

It's been 80 years since the 4-H Beef Club started in Fort Saskatchewan.

To celebrate this milestone, the club is hosting an anniversary celebration at the Moyer Rec Centre in Josephburg on May 28.

The 4-H beef club is open for kids in the area between the ages of 6 and 21.

"They learn so much. It's not just about taking care of animals, it's about giving back to your community and working hard," said Lea Appleman, general leader of the club. "It teaches the kids ethics and gives them goals and things to strive for."

PIC opens next phase of Technology Leadership Program

Protein Industries Canada is now accepting new Expressions of Interest  (EOI) for their Technology Leadership Program.

CEO Bill Greuel says they had 36 EOIs in the first call, noting it's evident that the sector is positive about the long-term growth opportunities for plant-based food, feed and ingredients, and that the cluster model has been embraced by the industry.

EOIs under the second round will be accepted until June 26th.

Projects must include the use of a high-protein dryland crop such as lentils, peas, chickpeas, canola, fava, oat, flax, lupin or soy.

Update: Edmonton hazmat team responded to incident near Sherwood Park

Edmonton fire and hazmat crews were on the scene of an incident near Sherwood Park on Tuesday (May 9) morning. 

Crews were called to the scene of 101 Avenue and 37 Street to reports of odd-coloured smoke coming from one of the tanks at the Building Products of Canada plant. 

Five crews, including one hazmat crew, responded to the incident. The hazmat team was testing air quality while fire crews worked with onsite operators. 

One fire, caused by excessive heat in the tank, needed to be extinguished by firefighters. 

Fort Saskatchewan Indigenous Society hosts event for Red Dress Day

There was a walk, a roundance, and powwow dancing for Red Dress Day in Fort Saskatchewan at Legacy Park on Friday (May 5).

The event was hosted by the Indigenous Society of Fort Saskatchewan, a group that formed out of a desire to help people through difficult times.

Red Dress Day is an annual event in memory of the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit people across Canada.

Local gardening expert offering up spring tips

A local gardening expert is offering up some spring tips to residents in the area. 

Tam Andersen, who runs Prairie Gardens and Adventure Farm, might just be the best person to go to for any tips regarding growing plants and maintaining a garden. 

With the abnormally warm start to the season, Andersen suggests getting a head start on your garden. 

"In our 37 years of gardening I have only ever seen it this warm once before," said Andersen. "Why not take the dive and start planting now!"
