Alberta government explains multiple emergency alerts

The Alberta government has given a reasoning for the nine emergency alerts.

Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis, gave the following explanation:

“During the test in Alberta on March 1 of the new national system, a glitch caused multiple test alert messages to be distributed to compatible devices," Ellis wrote in a statement.

"All partners in the National Public Alerting System are working with the Alberta Public Alerting team to identify and resolve the issue that caused these repeat alerts.

Alberta delays changes in traffic laws to educate public

Just a day before going into effect, the Alberta government announced that they have delayed changes to the Traffic Safety Amendment Act.

Originally scheduled to come into effect on March 1, the changes would include different laws for passing emergency vehicles. 

Instead, the province has pushed back the changes to September 1. They say their reasoning is to prevent confusion.

Two big Canadian cell companies raise costs for roaming

If you plan on taking a trip out of the country, you may feel it in your wallet.

Starting next Wednesday (Mar. 8), Telus will charge users $16 per day for roaming internationally, up from its previous cost of $15 per day.

In the United States, roaming rates are slightly cheaper for Telus, with an increase from $12 to $14 a day.

Bell is also planning to raise its roaming rates, with U.S. rates going from $12 to $13, and the international rate going from $15 to $16.

Alberta government commits to funding new school in Sherwood Park

A much-needed Sherwood Park replacement school has secured funding. 

On Wednesday (Mar.1), Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) announced that the Alberta government has committed to making room in the 2023 budget for the construction of a replacement school for both Sherwood Heights Junior High and Ecole Campbelltown. 

“Having a replacement school in the well-established neighbourhood of Sherwood Heights will benefit families in the county for decades to come," said Trina Boymook, the EIPS board chair. 

Councillor Makin provides perspective on Veterans Way expansion

Fort Saskatchewan city councillor Lisa Makin has given her opinion on the proposed expansion of Veterans Way (Highway 21).

The proposed bylaw, which involves borrowing almost $5 million, received approval from all but two members of city council during its first reading.  

The two city council members who voted against the idea of borrowing money for the expansion were Jibs Abitoye and Mayor Gale Katchur, who both prefer getting funding through a provincial grant.

Guardians of the Grasslands game teaches students about the role cattle play in protecting a key resource

The documentary "Guardians of the Grasslands" has now evolved into an online game for students in Grade 7 to 10.

Students in Alberta will be the first to experience the online grazing simulation game which focuses on the ecosystem services provided by raising cattle on grasslands.

Amie Peck, manager of public and stakeholder engagement with the Canadian Cattle Association says they had excellent uptake with the film in classrooms.

Feeder cattle prices see an increase

The latest Canfax report shows the number of cattle on feed in Saskatchewan and Alberta is down.

According to the report the number of cattle on feed as of February 1st was at 1,049,686 head down from the January 1st number of 1,087,813 head.

Last week 7,779 head of cattle went through Saskatchewan Auction Marts, that's down from the 9,400 head marketed during the same week last year.

Prices for Saskatchewan feeder steers and heifers last week were up from the previous week. 

U17 AAA Rangers battling for first place

It's coming right down to the wire for the U17 AAA South Fort Chev Rangers. 

With just two games remaining in their regular season, the Rangers find themselves atop the league with 58 points and a sparkling 28-2-1-1 record.

"We are on a 16-game winning streak right now," said Mason Hawkes, the head coach of the Rangers. "We've kept the train on the tracks and have kept going in the right direction." 

With such a fantastic record it would be easy to assume that first place is all but guaranteed, but that isn't the case.
