Red Deer City Council exploring ways to balance 2025 Budget  

Red Deer City Council is considering service level changes to balance the 2025 Budget.  

During the Sept. 4 council meeting, city administration presented 24 possible budget changes for councils' consideration.   

The potential budget changes stem from a service level review and prioritization exercise which council and administration undertook over the summer.  

Hate-fueled vandalism in Red Deer: RCMP investigating vehicle graffiti case

The Red Deer RCMP are seeking leads into a vehicle vandalism case.  

On Sept. 4, police received a report of mischief to a vehicle on 47 Street and 45 Avenue in Red Deer.  

The victim’s vehicle was vandalized with various profanities.   

RCMP launched an investigation, including a search of the area, but no leads were found.   

Man wielding crow bar attempts bank robbery in Sylvan Lake

On Wednesday, at around 2:45 p.m., a lone male dressed in safety clothing attempted to rob the Sylvan Lake CIBC (5007 50th Street) with a crow bar.

The suspect entered the bank and demanded that the clerks hand over any available cash. The man fled the bank on foot and was last seen riding a mountain bike.

No one was injured during the incident.

The suspect is described as:
- Standing approximately 6 feet tall;
- Ridding a BMX style bike;
- Wearing a mask, dark sunglasses, high visibility construction type clothing.

Fraser Institute ranks local elementary schools' academic performance

Central Alberta families can compare the academic performance of local schools by using the Fraser Institute's Report Card on Alberta’s Elementary Schools.  

This year, the report ranks 730 public, separate, independent, and charter schools based on eight academic indicators gathered from province-wide test results.  

Lacombe turns out in droves to help purchase E-Bike for local youth battling cancer

Lacombe residents flocked downtown Wednesday night to help raise money for a local youth who is battling bone cancer.

The Flat Iron Jazz Band performed at Echo Stage at the Lest We Forget Park at the Lacombe Memorial Center, with those in attendance making donations to help purchase an E-Bike for 12-year-old Lydia Roos.

Katie Courser, 14, and Purva Patel, 13, were onsite helping to collect donations. Katie's mom Cheryl plays saxophone in the band and was involved in organizing the event.

Two newly recruited family physicians join Red Deer clinic 

The Red Deer area now has increased access to primary care, with the arrival of two new physicians.  

Dr. Adeola Adeyemo and Dr. Tolulope Shittu have joined the Branch Medical Clinic and will provide hospitalist coverage at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.   

Both physicians completed their medical education in Nigeria and bring nearly 15 years of clinical experience to their practice.

At the regular Red Deer City Council meeting on Sept. 3, extended producer responsibility, a preliminary review of the 2025 election, and direction on the upcoming budget were some of the topics discussed.

Bionic Golf Tournament this Friday in support of organ donations

The 14th Annual Bionic Golf Tournament is happening this Friday, September 6th, at the Gull Lake Golf Course.

Golfers will be teeing off for the event which is held in support of organ donations for the Human Organ Procurement Exchange (HOPE) at the University of Alberta Hospital Foundation.

Last year, the event raised over $41,000. Tyson Czuy one of the main organizers of the event, says this year's goal is to raise $50,000. He explains why it is so close to his heart.

Red Deer Hospital access to be impacted starting next week as parkade expansion continues

With work continuing on the expansion of the parkade at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre, 39 Street will temporarily close next week to accommodate the delivery and installation of additional precast concrete that will be used to form additional levels.

Starting September 10, 39 Street will be closed between 52 Avenue and 51 Avenue directly south of the parkade. The parkade exit onto 39 Street will also be closed, with pedestrian traffic being redirected around the parkade to the east and west.
