Lacombe County welcomes new fire chiefs to Clive and Alix
Lacombe County is pleased to announce the appointments of Steve Zaytsoff as District Fire Chief for the Clive Fire Department and Corrie Anderson as District Fire Chief for the Alix Fire Department. Both individuals bring decades of combined experience, deep ties to the fire service, and a shared commitment to public safety, leadership, and community service.
On June 17 (Clive) and June 19 (Alix), Change of Command ceremonies were held to officially recognize the leadership changes at those district departments and welcome the new fire chiefs to their departments.
Searchers recover second body after rockfall near Banff National Park hiking trail
Search teams located a second body Friday following a massive rockfall off a hiking trail in Banff National Park.
“RCMP are notifying their next of kin and no further information is available at this time,” read a statement issued by Mounties and Parks Canada.
A 70-year-old woman from Calgary was first found dead at the site of Thursday's rock slide at Bow Glacier Falls, north of Lake Louise.
Three others were taken to hospital and were reported in stable condition.
Bentley School ends year with spirited slo-pitch showdown
Bentley School wrapped up the year with an energetic slo-pitch game, marking a first for the school of approximately 430 students from kindergarten to Grade 12.
The event featured a friendly faceoff between graduates and teachers, an idea led by Tayler Button, who teaches science, drama and guitar at the school.
Button, who has been at Bentley School for three years, came up with the idea as a fun and meaningful way to spend the final days of the school year.
Stingers survive Surge in historic Red Deer CEBL game
Basketball fans in Red Deer were treated to a high-energy showdown Thursday night as the Edmonton Stingers survived the Calgary Surge 98–95 at the Marchant Crane Centrium.
The matchup marked the first time the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) hosted an out-of-market game, and a passionate crowd turned out for the historic occasion.
Despite the loss, Surge guard Jameer Nelson Jr. said both teams delivered a thrilling performance.
Rebels sign local 19-year-old defenceman
The Red Deer Rebels have signed defenceman Keith McInnis to a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.
McInnis, 19, was selected by the Rebels in the fifth round, 91st overall, in the 2021 WHL Prospects Draft.
The Red Deer native spent the past two seasons with the Brooks Bandits, competing in both the AJHL and BCHL. He recorded 53 points — including 19 goals and 34 assists — across 77 regular season games.

Fortis Alberta reporting an unplanned power outage in Springbrook
Just after 6:30 pm, Thursday evening, Fortis Alberta crews were called to an unplanned outage in Springbrook.
The cause of the outage is unknown and currently under investigation.
Fortis has an estimated restoration time of 9:30 tonight.
Red Deer volleyball team honoured with Mayor’s Recognition Award
A Red Deer volleyball team has received a Mayor’s Recognition Award following a spectacular season.
The senior boys’ volleyball team from Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School won the 4A provincial championship this year and was nominated for the honour by their principal.
The Lindsay Thurber Raiders were presented with the award during a ceremony on Wednesday night.
Head coach Travis Czainski said the team enjoyed one last celebration together.
Update: Reports of potential rock slide in Banff National Park; multiple agencies responding
RCMP has confirmed that one person was found deceased following a rockfall near Bow Glacier Falls in Banff National Park. Two individuals were transported by STARS Air Ambulance to Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, and a third by ground ambulance. Their conditions remain unknown.
Parks Canada said search and recovery operations continued until dark Thursday and were scheduled to resume Friday morning to confirm that no other hikers remain missing.
New mural on 50 Avenue celebrates Lacombe’s identity
A new mural showcasing Lacombe is now visible on 50 Avenue near the former Lacombe Chamber of Commerce building.
Local artist Lauren Cowles was approached by the City of Lacombe last summer to design a mural representing what the community stands for.
She spent eight months collaborating with the city, identifying the elements that capture the essence of Lacombe.
This is Cowles' second mural in the city and her first completed entirely in digital format. She created the artwork on her tablet before it was enlarged and printed on a dibond sign.
