Central Alberta athletes strike gold at Canada Summer Games

Team Alberta struck gold three times on Day 2 of the 2025 Canada Summer Games, wrapping up the day with a total of three gold, two silver, and three bronze medals, bringing the province’s overall medal count to 11.

Central Alberta athletes made waves in the pool, Red Deer’s Kingston Hitchcock captured silver in the men’s 400m individual medley and bronze in the 4x100m mixed medley relay, while Didsbury’s Wesley Wilks earned bronze in the men’s 50m Special Olympics breaststroke.

Major institutional investors are asking the federal government to give them a reason to invest more at home in the upcoming fall budget, says the Liberal MPs leading budget consultations across Canada.

The federal Liberals are in the midst of consultations on the upcoming 2025 budget. While federal budgets typically are tabled in the spring, this one is set to land during the fall session of Parliament.

RCMP creates drone corridor along part of U.S. border in bid to boost security

The RCMP is introducing a drone corridor along part of the Canada-U.S. border in an effort to boost security.

Drones are to patrol the border in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba in what the RCMP says is a trial.

The force says the corridor has been established with help from Transport Canada and drone patrols will target illegal activity including smuggling and drug trafficking.

It says the corridor extends from the ground to 500 feet in the air and one nautical mile north of the border, or just under two kilometres.

Samson Cree Nation youth wins national story competition

A Samson Cree Nation youth has won a national competition for Indigenous child authors.

Vienna Swampy didn’t see her culture or community represented in many stories, so she decided to write her own.

“I didn't see a lot of books having Cree representations and I thought it would be cool if I wrote some,” said the 13-year-old.

“Growing up, I always wanted to see that, and I thought it would be cool for younger kids in the community to actually see someone representing them in books.”

First-time school bus riders can learn safety starting Tuesday

Central Alberta’s youngest students will get a hands-on lesson in school bus safety this month through the annual First Rider program.

The free event, offered at schools across Central Alberta, gives children and their parents a chance to watch a school bus safety video, learn how to ride the bus, practise getting on and off, take a short ride and participate in an emergency evacuation.

Albertans can start pre-ordering paid COVID-19 shots after June policy shift

Albertans can begin pre-ordering COVID-19 shots for the fall after a recent policy shift.

Those looking to get vaccinated will still need to book an appointment and most will have to pay more than $100 to get it.

Premier Danielle Smith's government announced the policy shift in June.

Smith has said $135 million got "flushed down the drain" last year, with doses wasted in part because Albertans are increasingly choosing to not get them.

Three Hills RCMP investigate residential break and enter

 On August 8, 2025, between the hours of 4:30 and 6:20 p.m., a suspect broke into a residence in Three Hills and stole assorted items from inside. The suspect had attended the residence prior to the break and enter and spoke with the homeowner. The suspect told the homeowner he could repair his trailer for a fee of $300. The suspect later returned when the homeowner was gone. He then committed the offence.

Police believe the suspect attended other residences in Three Hills and spoke with homeowners/tenants.

Travel doc info included in WestJet cyberattack, but not credit and debit cards

WestJet says some personal data including information about travel documents such as passports was stolen in a cyberattack earlier this year, but credit and debit card numbers as well as user passwords were not compromised.

In a note to customers, WestJet says the personal information taken varies from person to person but may include name, date of birth, e‑mail address, mailing address, phone number, gender and recent travel booking history including travel booking numbers.

Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County announce joint bid for 2028 Summer Games

The Town of Rocky Mountain House and Clearwater County have announced a joint bid to host the 2028 Alberta Summer Games.

As part of the bid process, the 2028 Alberta Summer Games Bid Committee is seeking letters of support from local organizations.

Residents are also being asked if they would support having the games in the area.
