Sylvan Lake RCMP on scene at serious motor vehicle collision

Sylvan Lake RCMP are currently on scene of a serious motor vehicle collision at Highway 12 and Highway 766. 

Traffic in all directions is currently affected. 

RCMP anticipate remaining on scene for several hours.

Additional updates to follow when more information is made available.

Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area and find an alternate route.

 

Lacombe police release impaired driving stats for 2024

Lacombe Police Service (LPS) is reminding residents to drive sober this summer, as officers continue efforts to reduce impaired driving on local roads.

This July, LPS is joining police agencies across Alberta in raising awareness about the dangers of impaired driving—whether caused by alcohol, cannabis, or other substances.

In 2024 alone, Lacombe police issued:

  • 22 Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) Fail penalties, up from 18 in 2023

  • 25 IRS 24-hour suspensions

  • 1 IRS novice suspension

Lacombe Ford completes successful first year of high school partnership

Lacombe Ford has completed its first partnership with Lacombe Composite High School’s mechanics program for the 2024–25 school year.

As part of the initiative, the dealership donated a 2007 Ford F-150 to the program, along with a list of required repairs and all necessary parts. Students completed the repairs as a full start-to-finish project, designed to simulate work in a professional auto shop.

Can you describe Lacombe Days to someone who has never been?

Lacombe Days is a three-day festival held right here in Lacombe. It has that great small-town vibe to it, with about 50 free or low-cost events. Some are organized by our board, and others are put on by community groups, businesses, and organizations.

First Nation seeking court ruling on Alberta ending coal mining moratorium

An Alberta First Nation is asking a judge to review the provincial government's decision earlier this year to end its moratorium on coal mining.

In an application for judicial review filed this week, Siksika Nation says Alberta failed in its duty to consult when in January it lifted its moratorium on new coal mining projects on the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.

Siksika Nation, 95 kilometres east of Calgary, says the effects of coal mining in the Rockies threaten Treaty rights and the land that supports its livelihood.

Aspire's “Park IT” summer day program returns to Central Alberta for its 20th season.

Aspire Child Development Centre is celebrating the 20th season of its beloved "Park IT" program, a free, drop-in playgroup designed for children with diverse needs, their families, and the community.

Running now through till August 15, "Park IT" travels between Red Deer, Penhold and Blackfalds, offering developmentally appropriate recreational activities that support the unique needs of children with disabilities while welcoming all families who wish to participate.

Prairie Crop Update : June rains bring some much-needed rain to many areas

June brought its share of thunderstorm activity to the Prairies.

The Canadian Crop Hail Association says mid-June thunderstorms damaged crops across Western Canada, dropping pea- to toonie-sized hail.
 
CCHA member companies are investigating more than 900 claims of crop damage from hailstorms that occurred June 13-20. The majority of the claims were filed in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Farmers have been out evaluating crop damage to determine the impact, as some crops can recover depending on the damage and the stage of the crop.

City of Lacombe announces changes at recycling depot

The Wolf Creek Recycle Depot has a new contractor, which means less sorting for Lacombe residents.

The City of Lacombe has announced that the Wolf Creek Recycle Depot is now under the management of a new contractor.

Residents are assured that depot operations will continue as usual, with one key improvement: less sorting will be required, making recycling even easier for the community.

Looking ahead, the city also announced that curbside recycling will return to Lacombe next year through Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) program.
